how do i tell what typ of axle dana 40 etc

Hi WHB.., welcome....

Dana 44 has a large nut on the top of the knuckle.....the Dana 30 has 4 small bolts.

Ford changed from the 30 to the 44 in '71 1/2

You're showing '72 so yours is most likely a D-44
