i have a 71 bronco, i notice some oil on my tire so i pulled the tire and brake hub off and saw it coming from the under the axle hold down plate, i remove the 4 bolts holding it in and tried to pull the axle out, but no go i also notice that some PERSON had beat the crap out of the axle where the tire mounts, i went to autozone rented a slide hammer put it on the axle gave it a couple pulls and out it came, but with only half of the bearing case. i tried a cold chiesel and it was actually busting up the cold chiesel rather then the bearing housing. I need help to get this thing out any ideas PLEASE

It sounds like you had an outer axle bearing seal failure, the hard metal is actually similar to a bearing race. This is a complete 1 piece assy. To replace the assy if it comes off w/ the axle you stike a chisel across the race and it should cause a split since it is so hard and then it would slide off the axle. It sounds as though this has come apart or possibly spun inside the axle tube. If this has happened you may have to pull the axle apart and cut this race out w/ a torch. You will need to measure the inside diameter of tube and repair as needed. Good luck.

When you put it back together and the bearing feels sloppy add some green lock tite to it. This will hold the race in place from spinning if thats the case. Might sound odd but I did this with my front pinion brearing race cause it would actually spin by hand. Kept eating up my gears. Once I used green lock tite its been great. I've taken it apart and I had to really hit the race hard to get it out. I repalces it with the green again and its still runnin strong. Its good stuff. A torch help if you can't get it off after using it.
