I was driving into town earlier in the company van and got to thinking about the powerplant and trans that it has in it. It's a 2004 E-250 with a 4.6 and whatever auto (with od) trans that came in it...I'm not real famiar with any of the newer Ford trannys.. Anyway. So I was thinking about how much I abuse the crap outta that van and never EVER have any problems with it. The thing has the rearend springs pushed down hard because of all the crap I have to carry around to do my job. It will still get up and go even though it's loaded beyond what it should be loaded to. The engine never loads up too hard or anything. I keep the trans in O.D. all the time...

So my thought is: What would happen if I were to pick up a *pickayear* Bronco for cheap and put in a 4.6L engine and connect it to whatever transfer and tranny for that year engine?

I realize that it would not be a beast or anything, but I'm wondering how well that would work. I know right off the bat the 5.4L is going to be mentioned. I don't know much about that engine. But I do know that since 2001 we have been using the 4.6L's in the company vans and I know what we do to them. No problems ever...

Thoughts?

Ideas?

a 5.4 is a 4.6 on steroids. A ton of power but the swap will be rocket science. That is a complete transformation, if you have the ability to perform this swap, definatly go for the 5.4, and keep the 4.6 for the cars. If this is a serious option for you and your not just dreaming about a cool swap you could do I would be very interested in hearing about the swap. If you do it take notes and lots of pictures if you don't mind. And post them, that would be cool

Definalty a diesel swap... I would love to have a diesel bronco- how cool would that be?!

We have a diesel Toyota camry and we get looks all the time at the fuel station, imagine the looks in a bronco? We even had one old man run up and tell us that we were putting the wrong fuel in our car. People have a hard time believing it really is diesel. Hah. Well if anyone decides to do a diesel sawp, take very detailed notes in case I ever decide to do the same thing. =)

beautiful trenton, n.j.
while the powerstroke seems to be a pretty bullet proof motor, im not a big fan of the can of marbles sound. i used to have a neighbor with a f-350 crewcab w/ diesel and flowmasters. ugh it should have been illegal.

I think it would be pretty cool to do the 5.4L and you should be able to get everything out of a junkyard since a bunch newer 150's and 250's have 'em. You do know that you would have to get all the wireing, sensors, computer and possibly front and rear axles right? Big project but sounds BAD ASS. Oh yeah, about the gas comment, I didn't buy my Bronc' to be my gas saver, that's the 94 T-bird with the 4.6 in it.

For now, the whole thing is just an idea for me to be thinking about. I've got a ton of other things that NEED to be done before I can start on the things I really really want to do..

I'm not a real big fan of taking a good classic and putting something modern in it, but when you think about the power that can be made (from stock) in a current model it's pretty cool. And having that in Bronco would be pretty sweet. Mainly because there is nothing on the market, IMO, that compares to a Bronco. Newer vehicles just don't seem to be made to leave the pavement more than every here and there...

Anyway, I'm gonna do some checking around and see if I can find where anybody has done anything close to that and see what happened... I do know that I found a 1977 F-250 with a Caterpillar engine in it a few years back. That thing was sweet. Fella wanted way too much for it though...
