Hey y'all, I've had my '72 bronco for ten years, and since I've had it my column shifter has given me problems, namely first gear. I've replaced the column twice, replaced the shift rod bushings, and adjusted the 1st/reverse rod completely to the end of the thread. It feels like it just doesn't have enough length to slip into gear, and as you can imagine it's a true pain. Does anyone have advice on how I might remedy this? It goes into gear just fine when I have someone push in the clutch and I shift directly on the transmission, so I don't think it's the transmission. Anyways, please let me know. Thanks!

Welllll..,

You first (eng. off) need to remove the rod &, by hand, "feel" for the "detents" as you move the shift bracket from 1st gear to reverse. If you can "feel" the spring-loaded ball pop into position & stay there...meaning it takes pressure to move it from there to neutral, then reverse.

You could accurately, mark the spot at which it sits/locks in these positions.

Then replace the rod & have someone move the colum normally several times & visually note whether or not it "actually" hits the same spot.

If several attempts at adj. the rod length doesn't lock both 1st & rev. in the indents.., then there's a good chance the shift fork is worn & sloppy.

ALSO., it is poss. to properly drop into the detents, but the gears not fully engage due to worn out shift forks.

I'm sure you know not to do any shifting under there with

eng. runn'n & someone behind the wheel., working the clutch.... [-o< [-X :-B

Lastly.., when you say repl. the column twice...what does that mean...? new., used., re-built..?

Well I have give lots of thought to the floor shifter idea, but I am reluctant to do so. I love the fact that it's old school, no one I know even has a clue as how to drive a 3 on the tree, but I'm at the end of my rope on this one so I may opt to do so. What would you want for the floor shifter set up? And bully, what would you want for your column setup? I've replaced the column 2 or 3 times in the last ten years, so I'm really thinking it's a transmission problem. My only other idea is the part that sits at the end of the shift tube ( I don't know the name of it ) that's about the size of your thumb and has the square piece of metal that engages the shift levers. The square is a bit worn and rounded, yet I can't imagine that it would affect my shifter this much. I took it into a transmission shop right around the corner for one I know nothing about transmissions, and being in school and working I don't have the time to figure out a transmission haha. Anyways, thanks y'all for your advice. Let me know what you think about the shifters and/or any other ideas you might have.
