A much easier course of action would be to purge the water out of the 88's fuel system and drop your good 2.9L into it. But if you like the 89 so much better, of course it is possible to do the conversion. You have the donor truck so you should have all the necessary parts on hand for the job. It will entail a lot of work though.

The entire front suspension, the transfer case, and transmission will have to be swapped. You will need the support/mounting brackets for the transfer case and the rear driveshaft will need to be swapped over. If the axles in the two trucks are geared differently, you will also need to swap the rear axles. You will need to open a hole to inside for the transfer shift lever (or swap all the electronic parts if it is a "touch drive" model), if one is automatic and the other standard, (you did not say which you have) the associated pedals, brackets and linkages will need to be swapped. That's just a quick list off the top of my head. I probably left out some stuff, but the point is that it will be a whole lot of work.

That does not mean its impossible, if you have the time and know-how, it is definitely doable. It's up to you if you want to tackle a project like that.

In my opinion it would be much easier to just sell your truck and get a 4x4 especially the Bronco ll, People are pretty much giving them away so you wouldn't spend more then $3000 on a nice one.

It would cost you twice that to swap and it will still only be a Broncoll. It wouldn't be worth the headache.
