1974 Bronco Questions

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and was hoping I could get some imput on a few things. I recently obtained a 1974 Bronco Sport from my grandfather who passed away. Only 37K original miles, so that's preety sweet. I have a few questions about it though.

First, there are two gas tanks, aux. and main. Does anyone know which is which? Is the front one the aux. tank or the back one?

Second, what's the oil capacity and weight to use? I live in Wisconsin keep in mind.

Third, sometimes when I'm driving it like to just shut off. It starts up again right away, but it kind of stinks when you have to pull over and restart. Any ideas of what could be causing that? I'm sure there could be many things.

The front is the aux and the rear is the main, what motor do you have? The original 302's in the broncos should hold 6 quarts, the 200 I-6, 7 quarts. What does it smell like?

I usually go 5.5 quarts but off road it might help to have a bit more. You probably don't want to wheel this one.

As for the stall issue. Go around and check for things that are loose like the coil wires, battery probably needs to be cleaned and re-charged, the carb needs to some cleaner or a rebuild. It could be the points sticking inside the distributor (go electronic), bag ignition switch... It can go on and on with the old wiring and dash components.

74 is electronic.mine did the same thing when I bought it new.got tired of that and put in a points dist.trouble went away make sure electronics ign box on drivers side is screwed down and is grounded.6 years ago went to pertronix.also check the plug connectors at module and dist.

Fuel issues sounds like, change filter check tanks they could be rusty, the first date with my wife was with a 66 convert bug VW and we got stranded do too fuel issues(rusty tank), used to get stranded in the bronc with the old 12 gallon rusty tank rear

Check filters, blow out fuel lines and drain tanks(1 banana job bullybob)HAHa , 10w40 is fine for most everything,I have a nice 23 gaollon rear tank for sale cheap clean and new. Try propane instead

Wellllll..,

All the above plus., pretty sure it was the early Motorcraft/Duraspark elect. ignitions had some glitches. (distrib. is fine., it was the electronics.)

As stated above., it may just need a bit of cleaning up. Worse case., need a new module.

BUT... it could also be a carb., fuel pump., lose/bad wire., or even a timing issue.

A good brand of 10w30 --or 10w40 ..I like Castro 50% synthetic.

Check your local auto parts store.....they can advise what's best for your area via. their computers.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. My daughter and I just drove a '74 back from Denver and got home to Wisconsin last night. Very cool. We're over in Manitowoc. What part of WI are you in?

Thanks everyone for your help. It's nice to know I can get some sound advice on this thing. Sounds like I have a fun project ahead of me and probably a lot of money to spend. But, I want to keep this truck going for as long as I possibly can!

Ya know.., BBB has a good point, in that debris in the tank can float around & get into fuel pick-up tube & block fuel feed until the eng. quits & the suction stops...releasing the blockage. /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
