I have a 1969 Bronco that the clutch was replaced less than 6 months ago. I am getting a splinny sound when I am coming to stop from the area of the clutch on passenger side??? The sound was present before I replaced the clutch and has not gone away since repair.I also would like to know what best for everyday driver with regard to tire size and rear end ratio??? I am currently running 35x 12.5 and thinking of going with 33's with all terrain tires...I also pull a heavy trailer with a 4.11 gear ratio and in the hills of Florida and Alabama the RPM's and power issue are concerning??? Any suggestions would be appreciated

What he said., and, was the clutch bad., or was that an attempt to rid on the noise.? Was it a complete clutch, all new, incl. T/O bearing, pilot bearing, etc..?

Noises transmit thru the dr. train so, it may req. putting rig on a lift to find the source.

Tires 33 & up would work better with 456's

Do fill in you info pages for more accurate help... B)

not quite sure what you mean by a spliny sound, maybe you could elaborate more on that
I am a little suspicious it might be the clutch still...the clutch only had about 4,000 miles on it when I took to shop to have repaired. The complete clutch kit was a LIFETIME WARANTEE with new flywheel...I asked the parts supplier if the mechanic picked up the new clutch and looked at me like I was speaking Spanish...I think I've been had. Noise sounds like a metal soda can and a bicycle spoke sounds if that means anything

Typical clutch noises change when the pedal is depressed., or let out.

"...a splinny sound when I am coming to stop"

This is what's odd..?

A throw-out bearing usually has a death rattle & mostly in neutral.

A pilot bearing will squeal.

A worn clutch will shudder on take-off.., it can slip, & have an odd smell.

Are the brakes ok up front....?

Let us know what you find...this is indeed a mystery.. :unsure: :-B

Could also be a partially engaged hub that may not be fully retracted when in 2WD. Generally caused by old or too much grease that has stiffened up.

DUH...!!

I think Seabronc "hit the nail on the head" ..!

I was thinking something on the front end but "hubs" never came to mind... :-"

Faulty hub..! OR even the wheel bearing(s) or spindle bearing.... OF COURSE..!

thank you for your response...what would be the best way to get disengagaged with out total teardown??? will engaging the 4wl and then 2w work ???

Seabronc may add in but., Hubs, bearings & spindles are pretty simple & straight fordward.

Although, as stated, the prob./noise needs to be isolated first.

The parts store repair catalog has pics. & a step by step guide. This is the best way to go if, in fact, the prob. is in the hub assy.

This proceedure has been typed up on this board several times., & someone may chime in & post it. But again the book is the way to go.

Depending on usage...hubs should be cleaned out, inspected, & re-packed ev. couple yrs.

Same for bearings.

Putting it in & out of gear may work (temp.) but may just put off the inevitable.

---All this., assuming the hub(s) are the source of this noise.--

You could remove the hubs but leave the bearing nuts tight and drive a very short amount to see if the noise is changed or gone.

I cleaned out the hubs and repacked...still had the noise. I had to pick up some large supplies from Lowes so I loaded up my Trailer...no splinny sound on stoping but more of a humming/growl that was pretty constant. Jacked up rear end on stands and went through gear pattern...no sounds but a minor hum from rear end that was rebuilt about 3 years ago...any thought would be appreciated???

Hmmmm.., a mystery indeed.... :unsure:

All that's left is the trannie/transf. & U-joints.

However these items should have been closely insp. when the clutch was done & these units were out.

You could try removing the rear dr. shaft & drive a bit in 4WD (Front only)....Maybe that will help pinpoint the issue.
