For short distances, sure (by short I mean 200 miles or less), just hook up and go. If you are going any further distance then I would tell you to disconnect the rear drive shaft before you do it.

Welllllllllllll..., with some cravats;

The TOWING truck needs to be bigger & heavier.

Need a quality tow bar.

If your rig is lifted... IT may NOT "follow" ....meaning it may turn left when you turn right (& vis-versa) with the tow veh.

This means you need to make several laps around the neighborhood, (watching the Br. front wheels) making left & right turns.

Place trannie & transfr. "in neutral".

Having opened up a Dana 20 transf. case....the output shaft bearing "spins away" while being towed.

The gears that sit in the gear-oil don't spin...therefore., that bearing is on it's own up there....i.e. no oil is transfered up to the bearing , as is when in gear.

---------Why no more than 200 miles.? That's why.

Personally., I wouldn't go more than 50 miles W/O dropping Dr. shaft.....but that's me...!!! B)

The exact reason that Bully Bob said. And really, he is correct in that even 50 miles is quite a way without the oil getting into the top bearing.
