E4OD Leaking bad!!!!!!!!!!&#33

Well I'm at my folks place helping them get there business and home (they live in the back) squared away after a fire next door 9 month ago and my tranny starting leaking bad running out of the front of the bell housing when running. Thanks God It didn't happen on the highway. I have found a local place to remove the tranny and take it to the shop they used to get it fixed.

It only leaks when running. It left a stripe all the way down the street and a big puddle when parked. I'm thinking the forward seal and hoping it's not the pump.

I know that I have to get it fixed but what do all you smart guys think that I should have the tranny shop do when it's out besides fix the leak. As stated below it has 154 grand on it now. Would it be worth having a rebuild on it. It seems to shift ok with a little 1 second lag when shifting into reverse when hot.

I have read about the service bulletins and the Ford upgrades for the E4OD on this site. Are these things that any tranny shop worth there salt should know about? Or should I bring a printed copy to them.

I don't have bottomless (about a grand to invest in this) pockets but want to make sure that it will last when reinstalled and not missing out a opportunity to get it right.

May I suggest this? Print them out, and explain that you would like to get the best bang for the buck. Ask them to review them, and let you know which ones they would suggest and what the price would be to include the upgrades.

Should they know? I imagine that they should. Would they know? God only knows. This way, you show that you are an educated consumer, and you give them the opportunity to review the material that they *may not* be familiar with. It allows them to save face, and at least gives you the best shot at getting a better job.

Does that sound reasonable?

Well the truck has it's guts removed as of tonight. Talked to the place doing it armed with the info from this site and they seem pretty knowledgeable about the E4OD and the current state of the mods.

The comment from him pretty well summed it up. I don't want to have to take this thing out again. So I'm pretty confident that it will be in good hands. Fingers crossed.

Well I got the truck back yesterday and the tranny has never worked better. I noticed the shift point curves were more normal and the slight pause when shifting into reverse was gone. They replaced the torque converter and all the front seals to include the pump seals. They said the torque converter showed hot spots from worn lock up clutch and the worn something or another that caused the front seals to give way.

Anyway the total cost for the repair and the removal and reinstall was $950. I'm pretty happy with that. He did state that if I wanted to he could rebuild it for another $700 but after having a look at it that he said that he did not see anything that would warrant a rebuild. He did set the clutches and the other goodies in there.

Very happy over all. I love the small town garage. She got me home today on my 280 mile return trip.

Time to change the insurance to full coverage. Getting to much invested.

Next week new stock front coils and shocks. I'm hopping that new stock coils will get her nose on the straight and level.

The beast is back leak free!

Sounds great! I'd say you got a good shop there, he had the opportunity to **** you but he didn't.

Well I finally got around to pulling codes and low and behold the only one in memory was 628, excessive convert clutch slippage. Makes me feel good that the mechanic said the torque converter was bad and the codes backed him up.
