Power Steering pump pulley

[TX '73]

I have some play on my power steering pump pulley (belt is fine). It's a 302 motor on a '73 bronco. I think it's the original PS pump.

Is the pulley pressed on (it appears to be)? Assuming it is and I can get the removal tool from oreilly's, how does the tool work to remove the pulley and replace it? Ain't running the bronco til this fixed because I don't want to ruin the drive on the PS pump and I'd like to avoid replacing a perfectly good pump.

Odd..,

In that you'd think it would have flown off if it's loose..?? (yes.., it's pressed on)

Could it be internal & the whole shaft is wobbling.?

Some auto parts will pull it for you...others rent the tool for free. (& show you how to use it)

Usually, when replacing the pump...you have to pull & re-use your orig. pulley anyway.

Its like a big collar with a groove cut in it and threaded at the other end with a stud in it . The groove in the collar slides over the pulley nose youll see the groove in the pulley nose that it enguages . Then when you tighten the stud it pushes against the pump shaft . I have two kinds of pullers one is a snapon that is the groove kind and another that was a cheaper autoparts model and uses multiple fingers that enguage that nose groove . I have had that one slip the snapon one never misses . Putting them back on is the tricky part measure where it was before you pull it . Use lots of antiseize on the shaft and the bolt and I would recomend a 3/8-16 allen bolt and some hard washers for the reinstall procedure . /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Thanks, that doesn't sound too bad it almost sounds like a pitman arm puller. I'm not w/ the truck at the moment so I can't check but I'm sure I remember the shaft not being loose but there was play in the pulley. This all started with some funky tapping noise I heard, suspected a belt but found this pulley loose. I guess I'm lucky the pulley didn't fly off! Thanks again.

Yep, kinda looks like a small pitman arm puller....

I would still suspect that there is play in the shaft before I would think the pulley was loose.

Unless the pulley has worn a groove in the shaft there is almost no way for it to come loose AND still remain on the shaft.

OK - I'll check the shaft closely. If there is play in the shaft, this would mean I'll have to replace the pump, right? I don't see how the shaft could be tightened or repaired....

Yep...Like I said.., I doubt it's the pulley.

You can get a re-built pump only, & use your pulley & the "can" off the back of yours.

Today I stopped at AutoZone and rented a ball joint press, and while there looked at which tools that they have available for a loan. They do have PS pump pully pullers as a part of their loaner program. Their deal is... you put a deposit down sufficient enough to pay for it. IF you don't return it within a month, it's yours to keep.
