looking for EVTM

I have a 1987 full size bronco; 4.9l straight 6, 4 speed manual trans. I am having some major electrical (narrowed to wrong connections at solenoid or bad ground) and I am looking for EVTM...anyone got any pointers? any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated...thank you

Truck wouldn't start and had no power with key in on position so i went to disconnect neg battery cable, when my 1/2 inch wrench touched the body I got power. then i tried to start and turned over then started all over again. So i put a ground strap from neg battery to body and it turned over but the ground strap got VERRY HOT. I am now questioning connections at solenoid and/or a ground issue. gas gauge is below empty but is full..related? The fusible links look like they have been replaced from half point of radiator all the to solenoid...how do i know they are correct. I bought this truck to help a guy out but now i have no idea whats going on with it....any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. I have read alot on here but nothing is close enough to my issues but you guys all know your stuff!!!!

Although you have an '87 this *may* be helpful.

Here is a list of grounds for a '92 - '96 bronc

I took a look in my Haynes manual.

They list 10 separate grounds... A-J.

A. Starter mounting bolt

B. Right front of Engine compartment near the battery

C. Lower left front of engine

D. Right front of engine compartment on upper radiator support.

E. Left front of engine compartment Upper radiator support

F. Bottom of cowl panel

G. Rear of left fender apron

H. Behind bottom of right cowl panel

I. Left rear corner of cargo area near rear lamp assembly

J. Under center rear of vehicle on rear cross member.

I am pretty sure that a bad ground to the fuel sender or guage will give you an empty reading... I will have to check that first.

Could you please be more specific in your explanation of exactly what your issues are, where you have power, and when, and how you determined that you have power, or not.

These are specific to a '90 bronco, most of the info came from a Haynes manual, which is readily available.

I answered before reading your entire post. SORRY. The ground for the solenoid is through the mounting screws to the fender, (not a very good choice in my opinion, but that is the way it is). If the battery ground worked by adding a strap to the body, then I'd really suspect that the ground cable from the battery to engine and frame is either bad or has seriously corroded connections. The reason for the strap that you added getting hot is that it is supplying the ground path for the starter, ( a very high current draw). Also there should be a ground connection to the fender to supply a good connection for the solenoid ground.

Grounding is a cause of many freaky problems in Broncos. I have eliminated most of the dependence on using a body part as a ground path in my truck by running a ground buss with connector blocks to attach the ground wires to. The main reason is that the body and frame have only 1/10th the conductivity of a copper buss and using the body as a conductor is one of the major causes of body rust.

Yes, if I interpret this thread properly, a bad ground could cause your fuel guage to read either empty, or just not change at all.

I REALLY appreciate your help and I plan on attacking it again this weekend! The only grounds I've seen are 1) neg batt to starter mount bolt 2) exhaust manifold bolt to firewall under the cowl on the passenger side...thats it...no ground from engine to frame and no ground from batt to anywhere. There is a small gauge ground with the battery cable that is butt spliced to the two black wires coming from harness that crosses the radiotor. That entire harness from halfway across the rediator all the to the solenoid look like it has been replaced/respliced including all fusible links, all fusible links are going to same post on the solenoid. The solenoid looks new, it has a large copper post with pos from batt and all fusible links, tob small copper post has one small red wire to it, the other large copper post has pos to starter (only), the bottom small stainless/steel post is bare. Charlie Foxtrot (CF-cluster f&*k) I tell you what! Motor has been rebuilt 2 years ago and never the same since is what I was told, and the guy got sick of messing with it so sold it to me...

The normal location for the battery ground is to the front of the engine block and the one to the firewall is normally connected to the rear of the intake manifold. Also from the engine block to the frame. I'm not at home right now, but I will try to remember to get pictures of those locations when I get back Sunday night.

I just received my EVTS (electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual) for 12 bucks (shipping included) for my 92 from Ebay. Man is this thing great. It's a got to have. The trouble shooting, diagrams and location pictures are worth there weight in gold.

I can't remember who on the forum suggest I get one but thanks.
