I have an 88 bronco II and am currently thinking about blowing it up...

I was driving down the road and all of the sudden it just shut off.

After about 5 min it started, and about 5 min down the road it happened again. It has been doing this now for about a week.

Have changed fuel filter, fuel pump relay, and plugs....

wondering why when i press the inertia switch does it seem to start quicker...PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

That is a common symptom of the module located in the distributor. On older carbed engines it was the pickup inside the distributor and on newer systems the TFI module. The module shorts out when hot but works when cool. It is sort of like someone reached over your shoulder and shut the key off.

Goode luck,

:)>-

It's a 2.9 EFI, would u be talking about the ignition module??

Also do you happen to know what the inertia switch has to do with this..if anything?

Is the inertia switch popping up?

If it is already down and you push it down again, it is probably just a coincidence that the truck starts.

If OTOH teh switch needs to be reset before hand that is a different set of circumstances.

It is popping up, what could cause this, and what could it mean..???? I thought maybe the ignition module, so I replaced it also. Not sure if it helped yet, doubt it will <_<

No kidding?!?... I just threw that out as a wild card! LOL

I never had one off, so I never took one apart, but my understanding is that they are desined to pop up in the event of a crash, and by doing so they cut power to the fuel pump so that gas does not get sprayed all over if there is a fuel leak. I imagine that there is some kind of weight on a pendulum or something that when the truck hits a wall, the momentum of the weight forces the switch to pop.

I don't think there is any electrical reason for it to pop. I don't have any diagrams here to search, but my best guess is that the switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

There are better mechanics here than me, and I am sure that someone has taken one apart and can fill in the details.

Have a great day... you really made mine!

First guess was to replace it, but I have no idea where to get one. I checked online at auto zone, and it didn't bring up a single thing.....although right now it does seem to be running ok, but she has a mind of her own...lol

Just drive with one finger on the button.

Nah.. I guess that won't work.

You'd be able to order it at a Ford dealership, or pick one up at a local junk yard.

Just by pass the inertia switch JUST TO TEST IT. Basically pull the plug out of the inertia switch cut the two wires mid way and connect them together. Then drive around you block a couple of times to see if problem goes away. If it does go to the junkyard and buy a inertia switch. They should be pretty cheap and reconnect every thing and be on your way!!

DON'T GO TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF AND THE INERTIA SWITCHES SELDOM GO BAD SO THE ONES IN THE BONE YARDS SHOULD BE OK.

On my way to NC to a great junkyard, oddly they just happen to have 1 88 bronco 2....so I'm going to go strip it and see what I can get.

I'm glad you can keep your sense of humor.

I agree with ViperFangs2, I imagine that these switches are pretty reliable, and a used one should be good to go.

Have a nice trip.

I made it back in one piece....!!!! lol

I had no problems at all, so it seems that it was my ignition module!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully she stays running well and doesn't become Christine again..lol

I need to find a few other random parts for her so if anyone is parting out an 88 near conway sc, let me know.

Thanks

Keep in mind that you may have been fighting two separate problems that ganged up on you. If the ignition module fixed the problem with stalling, that is great. However, if the inertia switch has been intermittently popping, replace it. As reliable as they may be, there are reports that on occasion one will just start to randomly pop because the catch in it decides to become very sensitive to bumps. Sort of the hair trigger effect, people have had it happen even with the car setting in the driveway and something bumping into it. I would like to give you a link or two to these issues, but it has been too long since I have read them and can't point to them off the top of my head. It may even have been the subject of a service bulletin, not sure at this point.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks SeaBronc for pointing that out. I was confused trying to figure how replacing the ignition module could possibly affect the inertia switch, when from the information given it seemed pretty clearly that the switch was a part of the problem.

You da man :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
