You have a couple choices, could either be a NewProcess 208 or BorgWarner 13-45 transfer case. The NP case is smooth, while the BW case has alot of ribs. Might find a thread for you with comparo pics, JSM84

Borg Warner case:

(This is a pic of a B-W 13-56, but the 13-45 has the same style and stamped ID location, left and below the shift indicator in the pic)

New Process 208:

Im gonna say its probably a NP208, thats what my 86 has in it. But to be sure look under your truck, for a either a red gear that says New Process on it, then itll say NP208F inside the gear. If is a BW next to the rear yoke itll say Borg Warner with the model number under that, i cant remeber if its a 13-56 or 13-45. Also the Borg Warner will have these rib lookin things on it, and the 208 wont.

which one is better
They're both good t-cases, but the NP208 may be easier to find. It seems to me that I've seen more mid-80's Broncos with the 208's and only a few with the 13-45's. But you can swap one for the other, as long as you swap the shifter linkage, too.

It looks like it will be easy to see since your skid plate is not there. Unless the angle of that photo is different than I think.

It looks like the skid plate is not there by the photo, but it could just be the angle.

I am sorry I thought you were talking about the transfer case.

My 1994 has a huge skid plate at the transfer case.

yes, there should be a metal ID tag bolted to the rearend center section. Your 86 Bronco most likely has the Ford 8.8" rear axle, which has a cover bolted onto the back of the center. It's also possible that you may have one of the last Ford 9" axles to be put on a Bronco. The rear cover on it is welded, so the center chunk comes out the front side.

The tag should be located on one of those bolts in either case. Deciphering the tag or your door jamb safety sticker axle code is posted in another recent thread. JSM84

If your truck has a tow package like mine youd have the 9" i would think because is a tougher axle. My 86 has the 9" in it.
