02 sensor..bad gas mpg

could having a bad 02 sensor cause loss of power and bad gas mileage?

when i bought the tuck about 9 months ago the check engine light was on and he said it was a bad 02 sensor. and i still havent changed it. could that be the result of me having 7 miles a gallon?

i added a brand new dist. cap, new spark plugs, new plug wires, oil change, new air filter and im getting still about 7 to 8 mpg.

yes. ive read that when the computer reads the bad 02 sensor, it thinks your engine's running lean so it will dump a lot of fuel into it to make it run rich protecting your engine, thus causing your gas mileage to go to the sh*tter.

thats why I took out all that emissions stuff... i dont think you can so i would change your O2 censor and that should get you maybe 2 or 3 miles per gallon more.

Yes, don't try to outsmart your computer. It uses the O2 data to adjust fuel mixture.

after 252,000 miles. i dont know if its ever been changed.

i thiunk it might be the 02 sensor because when i give it alot of gas to speed up, i can smell fuel in the cab.

You might want to check for an actual fuel leak. IF you can smell raw gas.

The O2 sensor is one a a few that contribute to the proper and complete burning of fuel. So yeah it could be the problem, but not necessarily.

Here is a helpful site that lists various sensors that if you read through it you will get a general feel for how interconencted the computerized systems are.

Also, as I posted above, you need to learn how to run the self test proceedure to get diagnostic codes. I just learned on Monday that AutoZone only tests (or at least around here) newer 1996 and newer codes for free. For an older rig like yours, you have to flash the codes to the dashboard lights, and count them. You'll see what I am talking about, when you read through the thread on how to do it.

Once you get the codes, let us know and we can help you trouble shoot it more. The problem is that without the codes, we could just be guessing and have you changing parts unnecessarily.

i guess i can buy a new sensor. they sell em for 49.99 out here. ill try it.

IF that doesn't work, then you can do the self test for codes by reading through these instructions. The only piece of equipment you will need is a pencil or pen and paper, and short length of wire to use as a jumper wire.
