egr problem

i was having a studdering/bogging problem so i thought my egr was bad stuck open. I replaced my valve but not the sensor on top. Well when the vacume line is diconnected the truck runs great, when i hook it up I get idle flux and bad pickup. Think it's a defective egr or bad senor? Any info would help. Also being it's a 95 with a 302. is there any pros or cons on keeping it disconnected.

If there is vacuum to the egr at idle, its not the valve or the sensor. At the opposite side of that vacuum line, there should be a small black soliniod with a 2 wire plug, and a 2 post vacuum hookup. one is to the EGR, the other is constant vacuum. That soliniod is supposed to switch on and off when commanded by the ECU. If its on constantly, its probably bad.

Keeping the EGR disconnected in an EFI engine could cause damage to the engine. EFI engine computers take advantage of the EGR characteristics which allow more aggressive timing curves. Without the EGR it is possible to burn holes i your pistons due to excessive combustion chamber temperatures.

Do your codes indicate that the position sensor is bad?
