IMGP1389.JPGHEy guys, new here. Just bought my first bronco. Im in the Army stationed in Anchorage Alaska. So I needed a truck and kept an eye on craigslist. Called on this bronco, long story short I loved it bought it and first thing I did was take it about 40 miles to Alyeska to go snowboarding for the weekend. Its runs pretty good, it doesn't like to idle especially on an incline. It sucks gas. But it sounds pretty good, and goes down the highway very well.

I basicly don't know too much about it yet. Its a 1984 XLT, the interiors pretty much gutted and rhino lined, which i like alot. Its got a few dings here and there, very little rust. Its got a 302, a c6 and its sitting on 33's. The mileage is anyones guess. Right now i need to ge *** to pass emissions so thats what im going to try to tackle this week, then the idling issue. And then, and then, and then..

That basicly it for right now. Im pretty stoked to get started, I havent had a vehicle in a long time and I miss working on them.

That's a beautiful truck :D/ . I recognize the scenery, my son-in-law was stationed at Fort Richardson for 3 years. The idle problem may be a sticky throttle position sensor.

Good luck,

:)>-

Nice bronco, Can't think of a better truck to handle the Alaskan terrain. Just curious about the idle proble on an incline, Is the truck carbuerated? If it is than if the incline is steep enough the motor will stall.

Well it doesn't have to be much incline at all. It is carbuerated. The guy I bought it from told me it does need a choke thermostat. Which Im going to order on payday. It does have vaccum issues, so I bought a chilton manual just for now, im looking for the dealer manual on ebay. Does anyone have a digital version by chance for a 1984?

Other than that ive stuck a window roller upper in it. First priority is the emissions, unless I can get it registered in Wasilla, which does not require emissions. I know a few people who do this and actually live on fort richardson.

I just fired it up after about 2 days of not moving, and that bronco was NOT happy about it at 0 degrees haha. I had to throttle it at about 1000 to 1200 rpm for about 10 minutes to get it warm enough to get in gear without giving up. My room mate just put his jetta in a ditch, so I got to try the wench out. Snatched his jetta out quick and easy.

A couple spooky problems came up when i was getting it fired up. This process seems to be almost like some kind or religious ritual at this point. I havent exactly mastered it yet. First there seemed to be no power to the dash, then it came and went a little each time i turned the key. Im thinking the ignition switch in the column may need working on but im not sure. Luckily two guys in my platoon have "partial" electrical engineering degrees.

Then as I was pumping the throttle befor turning the key the pedal just fell limp. So I jumped under the hood to make sure that the throttle wasn't actually engaged wide open. Which it wasn't to my relief. But the pedal was just limp, as i was playing with it it just came back to life on its own. Not sure what thats about. Fell off the front bumper into about 3 feet or snow.

Ive been trying to drive it as little as possible, the auto crafts shop on post here isn't open till thursday. Wich i can't wait to go check out its a nicer facility than the Goodyear shop I worked at straight out of highschool. I was extremely impressed when i went and did a quick tour. So Im going to go in there try to identify what all I have, I don't think the carb is OEM and see what i can do. They also have guys in the shop to help you diagnose stuff.

By the way thanks everyone for the complements. It was a great deal especially for around here. Its pretty much what Ive always wanted.

Hey... have fun with that truck. She's a beauty!

Once you get her little issues cleaned up, you are going to find that a bronco on agressive 33's is an awesome vehicle. You are going to love her.

Yep... the idling on an incline definitely sounds like a fuel problem (perhaps a float adjustment).

During WWII fuel injected planes had a significant advantage in dog fights, because they could fly upside down and power through a loop, whereas the carbureted planes had to make the loop with only momentum to carry them through. I guess it was because in the carbureted planes, the floats would drop to the top of the carburetor when upside down, thus shutting off fuel.

So i guess the moral of the story is to keep the rubber side down :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Have a great day!

NICE!!

Shoot you are driving a nifty rig already with the Rino and wench/bumper and it looks like a 4" lift too. Try a can of carb cleaner and up the mechanical idle ***** a bit and watch where the choke steps are landing before you get into taking the whole mess apart. Perhaps try a new fuel filter as well as an easy fix. Note too if it does better or worse when the tank is full. It could be a problem with delivery or return of gas.

Congratulations and welcome to the world of the best Multi Purpose Vehicle ever produced!
