Hi,

Has anyone heard of a cv joint for dana 44 axles? I'm checking this out for a friend of mine. He has a '74 bronco on 44", ARB air locks and a modified 302. The right U-joint is the weak link. He is always breaking it. I think he's not ready to go for stronger axles like dana 60 or something like that. (heavier). I think that changing the current joint for CV (Constant velocity) joints would do the trick.

Regards,

To be honest, a 44" tire is way too big to be running on a Dana 44. At minimum he should be running a D60 under that thing. Now let me ask you this, is he breaking the U-joint at the knuckle or the one at the driveshaft? I am assuming you are talking about the one at the knuckle if he is breaking those, but when you say CV joint, that makes me think you are talking about the driveshaft.

If you are talking about the knuckle U-joint, get in touch with Mike Kirkus at Complete Offroad. He is an early Bronco guy and has the best prices that I have found anywhere in the US for drivetrain parts. He will also tell you what is the best way to go about it. Mike also carries Yukon products which are some of the best out there.

There is also Randy's Ring & Pinion that carries U-joints, and they have more of a selection and they carry the OX U-joint.

Either way, if the knuckle joint is the one constantly breaking, get in touch with either of those places, but I would be looking for a D60 real fast because like I said, 44s are WAY too big for a 1/2 ton axle.

Now if you are talking about the joints on the driveshaft end, then there is already a CV joint at the transfer case and putting another at the axle only means that your driveline angle is way out of wack. I am not real sure if this is what you mean, but I hope not.

Hi, and thank you for your response.

Yes, he is breaking it at the knuckle. But by CV joint I mean like Audi uses for their quattro. The 6-ball design (see here), I belive it's much stronger and might be a solution for my friend, if it exists. He has never broken the axles, and only the right-hand U-joint is breaking at the knuckle, the left one has been there for as long as he remembers. It's strange because it's the longer axle.

That is the first time I have ever seen that 6-ball design, so consequently, I don't know anything about it and can't make an honest statement about it at all. But, being that I haven't seen it, it doesn't mean that it might not exist for a 4wd axle, but if it does, then you would obviously have to change both inner & outter axle stubs. Now, I got to talking to a friend of mine who is a competition crawler and he uses both OX & the Yukon Joints, which ever is available to him, and he says both are extremly strong and that if you are breaking the regular over the counter u-joints that you buy at the parts store, then you definatly need to order an extreme duty set. There again, get in touch with Complete Offroad or Randy's Ring & Pinion and get one of those. But with the time and money already spent, it might be of best interest to just get that D60 going ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .
