Well gosh Brad, I don't want to be cavalier about it but if the starter is bad then uhm, maybe you should, uh... Replace it ? I'm just funning with you because I've got a suspect starter myself and I'm hitting the boneyard tomorrow to find me another one. Gotta tell you though it's a bit hard to diagnose from your description but if you're thinking it's the starter then go yank one and try it out. It'll cost ya about $20-30 bux which is half the price Autozone wants and a third of what Napa gets. Just my opinion and even at that it's only worth what you paid for it.
Just not sure what you mean by an "extra" noise. There can sometimes be a loud "click" or "clunk" kinda noise that seems to be delayed for a moment and that can be the starter solonoid (found on the inner fenderwell) but usually when you hear that one it's followed by nothing, meaning the starter doesn't spin but what you're saying is that the starter does in fact spin up and start the engine & solonoid noise is usually associated with a bad ground or low battery voltage. The solonoid is really the only other thing I can think of that would be making a noise when you turn the key except perhaps for the fuel pump but that's at the other end of the truck and is usually pretty quiet.
I do have a bad ground, i think.. I went to start up the truck today and nothing, no click no dinging from the door being open, nothing. I just bought a new batt for it so i knew it couldnt be that. I started playing with the battery wires and when i wiggled the ground i got the door chime back. It wasnt enough to actually Start it but enough to get the most of the electrical to work. I kept playing with it and eventually got it to start. Well im off to go get new battery cables. Ill let you know how that goes, thanks
