I finally figured out the ignition system in my 85 bronco 351w 2bbl auto or what kind it is. the question I have is does anyone else have this and if I remove all the smog stuff and change carbs (going with a Holly 500cfm) will I have to change the Dizzy? I am not to familiar with the system. this is what I have researched so far:

The TFI-IV ignition system features a universal distributor using no centrifugal or vacuum advance. The distributor has a die cast base which incorporates an integrally mounted TFI (Thick Film Integrated) ignition module, a "Hall Effect'' vane switch stator assembly and provision for fixed octane adjustment. The TFI system uses an E-Core ignition coil in lieu of the Dura Spark coil. No distributor calibration is required and initial timing is not a normal adjustment, since advance etc. is controlled by the EEC-IV system

what are you converting it to?

is something wrong with the smog pump? why are you removing all this stuff?

the 5.0 mustang market provided tons of smog legal aftermarket products that will produce more than respectable power from the ford small block. are you planning on removing the computer as well? it just seems to me youre creating a tuning nightmare.

I live in Nevada and the smog stuff did not work and was half disconected when I bought it. the engine I have is a 351w not a 302. I dont know why this dizzy is on a 351w. I would like to go to the holly 500 and was just wondering if I changed the carb will it effect the dizzy?

If you are going to trash the EEC control, YES you need to change the distributor to a vacuum advanced system. You could go to the simpler Duraspark II system, a MSD system, or something else. The Duraspark II system looks like the attached diagram as do the others with some wiring changes. I have an 85 351 ** which I originally had a Duraspark II system on and then changed to a MSD system but for the present kept the Ford distributor.

Good luck,

:)>-

If you're just changing the carb to a model with similar connections for the vacuum lines, that in itself should not matter. However, if you've removed or are missing some of the emissions equipment, that can affect the distribyutor's performance. I agree with Seabronc, you may want to change over to a "simplified" dizzy like the DuraSpark II, or even consider an HEI unit for a Ford. When I converted my EFI 460 to carb, I removed the TFI and replaced it with HEI. Single hook-up, no external coil or ignition module to mess with. You can find these dizzy's on ebay, or D.U.I. makes a HEi for the 351W. You might also consider replacing the stock intake manifold with a 4 bbl. carb to get better performance. The Edelbrock Performer intake and 4 bbl Holley 600 cfm really helped out on my 351W H.O. It also allowed me to clean up about half of the spaghetti mess of vacuum lines, since much of the emissions equipment did not work. JSM84

personally id stick with something else. had the duraspark in my stang, thats why i was looking at dui. pick up a 5.0 mustang mag and have a look theres alot of choices and alot of that stuff works on the 351. even if it doesnt the 351 swap was pretty popular and so parts are usually shown for them as well.

The emissions stuff is part of the EEC control. You can't just randomly remove stuff and expect the EEC to be able to run the engine. The EEC depends on inputs from several sensors and makes adjustments to the engine such as mixture, timing control, etc. via other devices mounted in the engine compartment. If you need a diagram on what hooks to what, I can attach it to a post.

Are you trying to get back to basics? If I have to do an engine swap on my Bronco, I will be removing all of the computer type stuff including under the dash. I hate opening the hood and looking at a plate of pasta. I noticed you live in Fallon, TRAILRIDE!!! I live in Winnemucca.

Ya I would love to go on a trail ride we just moved here about 2 months ago . what are you swapping out? I see that you have a Six would that work on my 8? Yes I want to get back to basics. If you are willing to seperate with some of your stuff and if it would work on mine I would love to have it.

I know the DUI unit is pricey, but I found a few HEI dizzy's on ebay for $60-$70. I bought mine from White Performance for under $70 shipped to TX. A reman. DuraSpark II dizzy is about $50 from Rock Auto.
