70 Bonco w/302. Just put in a Flame Thrower II billet dist and coil. Engine was rebuilt 7 years ago and used maybe 4,000 miles a year hunting......ran great. Eng has RV off Road cam, polished pistions and 75 heads with valves for unleaded.

Swapped the distributor and coil and set the timing to 12 deg BTDC. Book says 6. Cant remember what I had it set for before I change it....duh. Seems like 12 deg is good as far as power and driveability. When I turn the eng off it keeps running....the more i advanced it the longer it keeps running. The lower it stops but the perfromance sucks and backfires. Also tachometer works fine when eng is on and running but when off it reads 1,000 rpm.....but all gauges are off like normal.....when you start the eng the tach needle goes negitive to normal when eng starts. Yes, I plugged the Vaccueme. When eng is off the tach needle stays at 1 K. All this never did this before the Distributor change.

Wasss UP???

What do you mean by,"keeps running"...?

Do you mean running normally...or is it dieseling/rough running..?

Some tach's float up at rest & go to "0" when key is turned to the "on" position.

Does that dizzy have centrifugal advance.? 12 deg. seems a bit high at idle with vacuum un-hooked.

Yep, keeps running normally but depending upon the timng it could be rough or smooth. Its smooth at the timing I have now for about 20 seconds or so and then chugs off.

It stays at 1,000 rpms when key is off and never did before. When you start the eng is goes negitive past 0 and then goes normal when engine starts.

Dont know about the advance, i bought the one quoted by Flame throwers web...pertech??? what ever the name is. The stock distributor had just a vaccume advance. The original Bronco manual I have says 6 deg BTDC but that idels good but has lousy performance and back fires now and then. Remember I have a RV off road cam....I dont know if that changes the setting or not...it was done over 15 years ago.

"----The stock distributor had just a vacuum advance.----"

I doubt this... I'm sure it had centrifugal adv.

I'm sure your new one does as well....Run your RPM's up off idle with timing light connected. The timing mark should climb steadily as RPM increases.

Sounds to me you have the dizzy stabbed a tooth off. (if so the timing marks are useless)

Naw.....RV cam is for low end grunt, towing, etc.

& WOW...! you must do some MAJOR hunting..!! 4,000 mi. a year..?

Also, no answer on keeps runn'n ..... assume you mean it diesels when key is turned off. (this usually means a timing issue)

Thanks for the tip....I thought the dist might be off on one tooth....had a dream about it last night. Thanks I will try it. What do you think about the tach problem?

As I stated earlier, ....may not be a prob. ....if I understand your discription..?
Came home early today and pulled the dist and reset to #1 again. Runs great now and I set it at the factory 6 degrees BTDC. Tach still works the same....I think it has something to do with the new electronic dist but it works fine, needle just stays at 1,000 rpm when eng is off.

Thanks for the help Bully and Big Country!

Time to go deer hunting next week and now Im ready......
