My lovely 84 is leaking a number of fluids and i was trying to check the trans fluid but I can not find the stick. I looked under it an there is red fluid on the bolts on the pan. Help please.

I know i feel like a total idiot of this forum.

On most vehicles it is on the passenger side toward the back of the engine. No question is a dumb question, if you dont know there is nothing wrong with asking. You can feel safe here asking any question you need to.

that is the location that the dipstick should be in but the handle doesnt look familiar at all. Have you tried pulling on it?

Well after much frustration and pulling on it i ended up looking for the pipe that went to the tranny. I found one and followed it up. The dipstick ended up being under the air filter housing on top of the carb. Not sure why someone would put it there but it was. Thank you for your help.

Roth, since you say there's fluid on the bolts of the transmission pan, try snugging up the bolts.

The gasket tends to shrink over time, and cause fluid to seep out.

Don't overtighten.
