I thought battery was dead since I was getting no crank or juice, but heard silinoid working or clicking. Took battery to napa and said it had full charge and enough to crank. I recently replaced silinoid last week, volt box, distributor coil, but hadn't replaced starter. I put battery back on and it cranked but didn't turn over. Is this is a timing issue/ connection issue/ or ignition switch problem. I cranked car and headlights dimmed but did not go out which the Napa guy told me meant starter is bad. I had recently cranked it and turned it over two weeks ago and it has been sitting. Is it also possible the starter works periodically. I also get a very slow crank sometimes sounding like it is trying very hard to kick. Help please, so I can get this car to the exhaust place and back :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Have your battery load tested instead of just checked to see if it is charged would be the first thing to do!

"......and it cranked but didn't turn over..."

Todd,

cranked & turn-over mean the same thing.....

Let's say., you turned the "key" & the eng. cranked (aft. re-installing BAT)........ at that point, was it rotating at a normal speed.., or slow as well then?

" Is this is a timing issue/ connection issue/ or ignition switch problem.?"

Could be any.., or all..!

Check timing.., all connections should be clean & tight.., with key on, check for 6V at the coil

"Napa guy told me meant starter is bad."

AutoZone will test starter for free.....

"......said it had full charge and enough to crank"

Did he do a "load" test...? Low bat. usually "ticks" the solenoid.

Are you gett'n over 13V at BAT. with eng. running?

Lastly..., do you have a manual...????

If not.., best advice is to invest in one. You'll be happy everafter........ :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> B)

It does sound like a bad starter if the lights just dim and not go completely off. Try hitting the starter with a mallet or something to loosen things up. Then try to crank engine with the key. If it is still the same then I suggest testing the starter like Bully Bob said. If its an old starter you should replace it anyways, dont want something easy to fix leaving you stranded somewhere. It will always leave you hanging at the worst times. If you replace the starter, you can get one for a later model mustang that work pretty good. Mine lasted for years then I went with a mini starter from Masco. Affordable and works great.

Thanks guys, took all advice. Just got done an hour ago. Sorry when I said the engine cranked I was referring to the noise coming from the starter drawing battery power or the solenoid. I tried to drive today to get lunch which was my first mistake in the EB. It was the first time i had driven more than 2 blocks. Turns out I ran out of gas :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> after two minutes down the road. Put two gallons in and tried to start but ignition became stuck and would not spring back to on I guess therefore draining battery power. So I then read your posts, went to remove starter since solenoid was replaced last week and working, then noticed it was extremely hot which i believe is abnormal for a starter. It tested fine but replaced at autozone with the one their comp. gives as a match since was also hot after test. Then replaced ignition box behind key on dash. Now it runs and starts perfect everytime. I guess the box was bad also. Goes to show you pay in the end anyways by not replacing everything up front that should be replaced on any 38 year old car. Thanks for all the help.
