I have a 1995 full size XLT with a 302. I believe it has the E40D transmission. Even though it's a good setup for the motor it's on it's way out, it is slipping while shifting at high rpm's and is starting to take several seconds to get into reverse and when it does it usually slams so hard it chirps the tires. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good replacement or where to find a rebuilt E40D even?
Please let me preface this with I never had an auto tranny apart nor do I have anything but cursory knowledge about them but here goes anyway.
I think in '95 the E4OD was standard. If you have a OD cancel switch on your dash, it is a E4OD. The E4OD is computer controlled. I don't know all of the sensors that the computer uses to control the shifting but I am pretty sure that it uses the TPS, PSOM and the VSS. IF one of your sensors are flaky, that *may* be a part of your problem, otherwise I would think that it is the begginning of an internal problem.
Without any specialized tools you can test your computer for Diagnostic Trouble Codes DTC "codes"
Here is a great article on how to test for codes.

This will be of particular interest to those with 1984 through 1988 models, but is also excellent for those up to the 1995 models.
If your tranny hasn't been serviced in the last 30,000 miles, I would service it... change the oil and filter.
IF you get codes and need help decifering them, let us know.
