So i just got a new tranfercase for my truck, its a NP208 like the on in it but seems to be in alot better shape. The shift forks went out on mine and i got stuck one day and tried to use 4 wheel to get out and i think i ended up strippin the splines off some bearings.

Im wornderin if yall have any tips on what i can do make sure its a clean install and any other cheacks i can do to the case before i put it in, i aldready spun both the yokes and shifted it to all the gears to make sure they spin nicely which they do. The guy i bought it from had it sittin a barn for a while and if this case is bad he has another **** give me.

:D/

It's a pretty straightforward instalation. What I *would* do is a complete fluid change and upgrade to synthetic. The synthetic will make a big bifference in how hard/easy it shifts and it will help to extend the overall lifetime of the case & companants by cutting down on the wear & tear on everything. Unless you know what you're doing and have done it before I wouldn't recommend opening the case or doing anything inside of it. Not just yet anyways. Change the fluid & install it. If it runs ok then forget about it for the time being.

Now, having said all that here's something else to consider. Keep your buddy's # because you may want to call him back. Once you get the replacement case in there you'll have the bad on on the garage floor. This is a GREAT opportunity to learn (and maybe more). Get a good manual (the factory manual by Helm Inc is freaking *great* for this, otherwise ck the 4x4 sites for an NP208 manual, gotta be some out there) and with that in hand open her up. One of the first things you'll learn is that bearings don't have splines :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> but you'll also learn exactly what broke. If the damage isn't catastrophic then you can get a rebuild kit and repair it. Look around and you can probably score an *upgrade* kit for it, something with a larger/stronger chain & gears. You may have a plastic shift fork (no, I'm not joking, quite a few T-cases have them) that can be upgraded with an aluminum one. There are a number of upgrades that can be done so that in the end you'll have a rebuilt, upgraded and much stronger, more reliable transfer case. If the internal damage is severe then you may want to call your guy back and make a deal for his other 208. Since you have a good case to install and run for now you're not under any pressure or deadlines to rebuild the broken case so you can sit back, take your time and really learn about how it works, what the weak & strong points are and how to repair & upgrade them.

Yea i did think about rebuilding mine if its not to bad. and i was thinking maybe some where in it some splines got stripped, beacause the sorry a** plastic forks went bad and i tried puttin in 4 wheel when i got stuck. Once it finally went into 4wheel the front wheels didnt do anything but sit there, that why i thought some splines got stripped

And i did think about puttin synthetic fluid in it, im also thinkin about puttin a seal kit on it because it was in a barn for awhile and the speedo cable hole was open so i wanted to pull it apart and clean it and do seals. My dad knows what hes doin inside of them.

What kinda gear oil would you recommend? Im thinkin either Lucas or Royal Purple, 75W90 synthetic.

Whoa, whoa, whoa there. Hold up. You want to be using ATF not gear oil. The only Tcase that should have gear oil in it is an NP205 or other similar (by similar I mean gear driven) cases. Chain-drive transfer cases use ATF. To that end I'd look for a good synthetic ATF. Not to be a spokesman for them but ATF is comparitively cheap (compared to synth gear/motor oil) and I prefer Mobil 1 but any large name-brand synthetic ATF will be good.
