the housing on my tranny is broken and needs to be replaced. Truck is a 77 with original 3 speed. I want to go to a four/five speed. Is there a transmission that will bolt right up with no mods.

Is there an automatic transmission with overdrive that will bolt right up?

What is my best option if replacing the tranny with no mods or very little?

Thanks

Probably not going to happen ... Try Advanced Adaptors. And, most all the Early Br. supply houses have these as kits...but a bit pricey.

No.....several mods req. ..& again.., pricey..!

An AOD will be your best bet for an auto. It should bolt up to the *engine* without too much hassle but there's no getting around fabricating the crossmember. The easiest solution will probably be to snag the AOD crossmember when you score the tranny and then modify it to fit but we all know that's a LOT easier to type than to do, but you asked so I'm answering.

The *best* option to replace the current tranny with NO mods will be to simply replace it with what's already in there (sorta like golf, be happy you *found* the damn ball, stick it in your pocket and go home) . I stopped goofing around w/EB's before the AOD got cheap enuf to use so the only swaps I've ever done were C4's & C6's. I like deep mud & get stuck a lot so I prefer having the ability to rock myself out of a hole, so I've never really hung out with the stick & clutch crowd. Might well be that there's a 4-spd out there that's a direct replacement but if there is *I* sure don't know about it and I can pretty much guarantee you that there ain't no 5-spd bolt-in's.

On the other hand, I've heard from a number of guys that the AOD swap isn't that big a deal. Advanced Adapters can connect the AOD to your Xfer case. Here's a good write-up on it that's been gathering dust in my EB bookmarks folder (I knew that I'd *eventually* get some use out of it :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> ) http://www.bronco.com/cms/node/62

Quite honestly I think an AOD is an outstanding match with an EB. It's a flat-out mechanical overdrive tranny that doesn't require a matching or stand-alone processor. The AOD-E and E4OD both require them in order to shift correctly but the AOD doesn't. The post-88' AOD's have most of the factory upgrades and any of them can be rebuilt to be *stronger* than a C6. Personally, I like them, there aren't many mechanical OD's out there, most are computer controlled so scoring & installing a decent OD tranny that *doesn't* require a stand-alone processor is a good thing in my book.

Anyways, you asked for input so here it is.
