I have it timed at 10 deg btc. Timing mark will jump down to 3 or 4 deg btc and then back to 10. Runs a little rough. Plugs look good. Any ideas?

This would normally be a prob. in the dizzy., or timing chain.

10deg. may be a bit high...be more specific as to how you timed it.

(vac line off, etc)

"newly rebuilt eng"

Machine shop., or home...?

I timed it with the vacuum adv off. Engine rebuilt by a reliable machine shop. One thing I noticed is the plate that the points and condensor are mounted to moves when I am trying to adjust the points. It is hard for me to tell where the plate should be set. There seems to be slop in the the plate itself ie: the tabs that hold it to the distributor. At 4500' elevation 10 deg seems about right. Maybe not, I am willing to take suggestions.

That plate should rotate but not super easy.....it's spring loaded & is the centrifical advance. Springs may be off or somthing else amiss under there.

10deg. may be correct up there....

Since this is a daily driver you will be much happyier with a electronic distributor, and clean out your tanks, I tell everybody too clean out there ttanks change there fuel filters and blow out the carb, the two barrel is a 1/2 hour clean out job total other wise, use the back of a match book too file points change filters and set dwell and then timing too 10-12 depending on elevation. At 4800 ft my 302 liked 12-14 timing on premium with a 670 four barrel with headers and cam and intake...
