Steering Problem

I have just recently converted my 71' Bronco to power steering useing a stock Bronco steering sector with a Saginaw pump. The kit fit wonderful and all works good. I am running 265/75R16 Maxxis Mudders, with a 2" suspension lift. My problem is that there is no resistance at all when steering now, which can cause some scary oversteering corrections and problems when hitting bumps, ruts or potholes in the road. Is there a correction for this, or is this just the way the first power steering units operated? I have asked several local mechanics about it, but none seem to have an answer. I remember a friend telling me that the power steering sectors had a check ball in them and if it was left out would cause the steering to become resistance free. Is this true? I have changed the stock steering wheel to a smaller diameter aftermarket one that seems to help some. Your help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Why not add a steering stabilizer to stiff up the steering a bit? You will get more feel in the steering.

A smaller diameter steering wheel will make the truck turn quicker and be less stable. They are used more for off road use so you don't have to turn the wheel so many times.

Are the pump and box rebuilt or used?

Is the Saginaw pump working properly, they have a pressure relief valve built into the fitting for the high pressure line, if the valve fails, you will end up with "light" steering.

No the early p.s. boxes are not known for being overly sensitive, in fact from experience I would call them sluggish when compared to a 76/77 box.

Have you checked the toe-in setting on your truck?

Too much toe will cause twitchy steering... with your tires I would recommend 1/8" to 3/16" at the most.

Thanks for the help. I have it back at the shop. They are checking to make sure the 4 degree c bushings were put in correctly, as this was the first item I was told to check. As for the pump and box, they are rebuilt. I bought the steering kit from Bronco Parts, so I have no idea about the check valve in the pump being missing or not. I will also get them to check out the things yall said.
