I am getting ready to buy spools for my 73 bronco. I have the Ford 9" in the rear and the Dana 44 in the front. Is there any reason I can not install the spools myself or is there some special tool (and or knowledge) that I may need that I would not have?

Thanks,

David

David,

Installing spools will mean doing complete diff rebuilds, similar to having your gears swapped, or even going to different carriers.

If you have never done this particular type of work and don't have the proper tools, you can ruin good gears and new bearings very quickly.

As mentioned by Bully, a spool in the front is never a good idea, if you have ever been in a truck with a front detroit locker, you will know what

he means. Even with a locker (which will un lock somewhat for cornering) they are very difficult to turn even small course corrections can over power a normal p/steering unit.

thanks for the info. I think I will go with the spool in the rear. Any affordable ideas on how to improve traction in the front? Oh, and by the way, I just got my doors on my 73. It is a lot nicer having the doors on there.

David,

Go to

http://www.reiderracing.com/home.htm

click on "differentials" on the left side

You will be looking at...

EZ locker

Lock right

no slip

performance locker

These are all types of "lunchbox" lockers.... they install into your existing open carrier case, more affordable than a new carrier, and no set-up costs.
