Hi,

When I shifted into reverse on my 96 Bronco yesterday, I heard a loud bang and the reverse gear was gone. I can drive forward, it shifts normal and it doesn't make any strange noises. When I shift in reverse, it's like it's in neutral, the engine just revs.

Does anyone have any idea what could have been broken?

I assume it's an automatic from your description.

Get it into a shop ASAP. That bang was a clutch pad or it's mountings going loose. Either way, there are now bits of metal in your tranny, and that is a very bad thing.

Yes, it's an automatic.

What are they likely going to do in the shop? Remove and rebuild the whole thing?

Maybe it's cheaper to find a used tranny and just swap it?

Yea that means the whole transmission is about ready to go. A trans shop is either goin to take yours and rebuild it or replace it with a rebuilt one. Gettin a used one would be cheaper but who knows how long itll last? If it was me id have it rebuilt....

Get it rebuilt or replaced. that way you have a warranty with it. A used one my not last you 6 months or it may go for years, you never know.

Good luck,

:)>-

I agree with the above posts...

I had mine rebuilt and it cost me $1600 but in the end I have a trans that is brand new and it had a warranty

Okay, I guess you guys are right.

Since this was our only ride, I need to get another car first.

Thanks,

Ed

If you can pull the transmission out yourself youll probably save some money. I helped my friend pull a C6 outta his 77 F150, he took it to a place in denver and got it rebuilt for about 650. Itll take more of your time up but i think its it would be worth it with what you save.

Well, I have swapped 8 cylinder engines before so I guess I can pull a transmission.

Keep in mind some places don't like to see a trans brought in to there shop out of a vehicle. I know everyone is just gonna say it's because they can't get the money they would if they pulled it and they are right to a point, the shops like to be able to test drive the vehicle to see what else is going on besides the obvious with the trans.

Just out of curiosity, what this trick to force it into reverse?

Has anyone ever tried to rebuild a Bronco tranny?
