Restoration is go...

Happy to have found this site and wonder if anyone else here has restored or is in the process of restoring a 78 or 79... Would love to see pictures.

My husband and I gutted our 79 completely (except for the seats - which will get replaced too at some point.) Then we got to work on the outside and took off everything we could or thought we should. Dropped it off today for new paint. Excited to see and document the progress.

Hoping to get a fun daily driver out of it!

Wow that’s a nice one to start with. Have owned my 79 since 1980, and it has been made into my Beast. Have a 78 out there we are building into the hunting rig my grandsons will love. You can see my posts. Had to do a Rewire on the 78, man the electrical engineer made a mess out of it. Have fun with your project make it your own

Thanks! We have a 78 too but it's going to need a lot more love - and by that I mean money, lol. I think it's awesome that you've had the 79 that long. I'll dig through your posts for pics!

Did you not take the dash out all the way and paint it? I did mine,but had a friend paint it. Last summer I was in Summersville( W.Va)and saw a good looking 78 painted lime green with a pretty blonde driving it. I asked my friend about it and he knew the truck. Said her dad restored it and if I,d like to meet him. He,d introduce us. He said the guy took it all down too. It looked really nice and sounded good.

Yup, we tore out all the dash parts too. The whole interior and dash are getting repainted to the original Midnight Blue Metallic. Unfortunately the instrument panel crumbled so we'll need to add that to the list of parts!

Which one? Some are for gausges---some with idiot lights and gauges and sometime the gauges are mixed up gauges. Take a picture of it and post it so people will know which one you need. Their is also a difference in the cluster sheet in behind it.

Thank you! I noticed you have a thread regarding bucket seats for your 79. I'm also needing new front seats for mine. Did you ever end up finding anything that worked for yours?

I have not found anything specific yet, but some great ideas from the group. The best "find" was a comment that the local junkyard only charges $40-$65 (in my case) for bucket or bench seats. So armed with that info, I know what vehicles people have pulled them from and have an idea what to look for. Mounting brackets and slight modifications will still keep it reasonable. My favorite was the seats out of an Audi that looked great. I'm on a mission!

I saw the Audi seats too! Never thought that would have worked... I need to start making more trips to the pull and pay. Good luck and I hope you'll post if you find something!

Was just telling my cousin yesterday. If and when I got another one. I,d take all the 4 wheel drive out of it. Put a posi in the back. A 6 cylinder--standard shift and go anywhere around hear.Plus make it easier to get in and out.

I have a 78 that I have stripped down to the frame. Took a lot of pictures as I took it apart . Now I’m getting the suspension put back on.

Also some regular junk yard .You can find deals their--where they charge or will trade you for metal-junk with you. I got a motor for a little junk--traded.

plus you can find sheets of metal and all different types of metal--at alot less price. Then buying new metal.
