I'm curious if anyone out there has used the 9" rear end housing offered by wild horses. It sells for 400 bucks and appears to be very good but I wonder if anyone has had any experiences with it.

Does it hold all seals etc. correctly.

My rear end is still in tact but since it's cast, I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop the leak on the back of the pumpkin. I imagined buying this unit from WH and putting my old 3rd member and axles in it with new seals etc.

THANKS for any feedback...

The only cast piece in your axle is the 3rd member carrier. Nothing else is cast. Your leak is probably coming from a bad pinion seal and the oil is just making it's way around to look like it is leaking from the rear. But unless you have a crack in the back of the pumpkin, your housing won't leak. As for WH's 9", all it is is a regular 9" that they have improved on by putting the "V" cut in the axle tubes & welding on big bearing tubes. Basically just strengthening an already strong axle. Kind of like cutting the tubes off of a small bearing axle & welding on the big bearing tubes. Just out of curiosity, what size rear brake shoes is yours? Are they the 10"x2.5" or 11"x1.75"? If they are the 10x2.5 then you have a small bearing rear end and the axle would be an upgrade for you. If you have the 11x1.75, then you have the big bearing rear end and are wasting your money. Personally, I would go junk yard shopping for the Torino rear end, which is what WH is talking about in the 76-77 EB axles being stronger.

But to answer your question, everything will go into it without a problem.

I believe the drums are 10"...

I need to look closer and clean everything real well and make sure I know where the leak is coming from. I'm pretty sure its coming from the backside of the pumpkin. But if its the carrier seal, that should be no problem. I thought I would weld the seam around the back of the pumpkin (on the outside) to close it up but someone told be a wire welder would not work because it is cast. Maybe they thought I was talking about welding the 3rd member to the axle housing which is what I don't want to do since I would not be able to unbolt and remove it.

When you say 3rd member carrier, are you including the entire pumpkin or just the 3rd member portion that bolts to the axle housing??? In other words, the entire axle housing is steel?

Thanks.
