Rear diff?

I was wondering if anyone knows how much play should be allowed in the driveline on the pinion side if any? I have maybe a full quarter of and inch of play in mine. Should I just pull of the cover and replace the oil and gasket? Anything in particular I should look for? And does anyone know how much fluid goes in the rear diff?
