Question: Is this common or a problem?

My 72 Bronco with a 302 and 3 speed manual "shutters, or jerks, if you will" when you ease your foot off the clutch. It does it in 1st gear and in reverse. I know it needs to be re-geared to atleast 4:10's or 4:56's, but with a new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing, I thought it would be much smoother. Giving it more throttle seems to help a little, but I don't want to fry my new clutch and I know that when I get the truck to the trails this will be a bigger problem. Any advice?

adjust the clutch. There is an adjustment "bolt", if you will, on the side of the bellhousing. You need to either lengthen or shorten where your engagement is. Follow the clutch rod down to the adjustment bolt and you can do it in about 5-10 minutes. You need 2 - 1/2" or 9/16" open end wrenches. Tighten or loosen the engagement.

Most times its axle wrap causing a shutter espically in reverse.

I had the same problem until I added traction bars. I've been running Duff's long link traction bars cause they work great and do well in articulation. They do limit travel slightly though. When I decided to get new 3.5" 10 pack leafs the shutter was gone without the traction bars connected. I decided to keep the traction bars on to save u-joints and because I run 38's. Never break u-joints anymore. Before without a traction bar I would blow u-joints quickly.

If you try adjusting the clutch I usually keep 1/2" free play in the peddle. Most times its at end of the adjustment rod and the bullet tip wants to fall off. You can buy extended rods if need be.

I hate to see yu have to toss any more 100s into your money pit, but lots of times clutch chatter is caused by a glazed fly Wheel and or pressure plate.

Lotsa luck.

Clutch and pressure plate are new, but could be the flywheel I guess. Thanks

I had a similar problem with my 76, tracked it to a weakened cowel/firewall structure, have a buddy cycle the clutch and watch for flexing or movement inside the engine compartment, this was source of my problems, but could also be grease or oil contaminants on flywheel surface. good luck

Had the same problem and the guy that said the glazed fly wheel was right when it came to mine! Its always a safe bet if it looks like there is any burn spot or you have clutch chatter it either one or both! Soory for the bad news but I hope that this helps!
