hey anyone else had a 79 with the newer plastic tank power steering pump, that wont keep fluid in it? i have tried bleeding the system, replacing the steering box, bleeding the system, changed the lines, but no fix, i cant figure it out unless its the pump itself. it will actually pressure up so hard the top will blow off the pump any help would be usefull.

From your description, I'd look for a plugged high pressure line. The inside of the tank should be at low pressure. You might want to think about putting an old reliable Saginaw pump on it. You can get one from a F250 of the same year as your Bronco.

Good luck,

:)>-

I took off the gear box and made shure the lines were good today just waiting to get the heater core back into the truck so i can run it again. didn't seem like the lines were plugged but it was definitely worth a try.thanks

i had the same problem, after maybe the fourth replacement cap i ripped the pos motorcrap pump off and installed a saginaw off an early 80's E350. it had a 400m so i was able to get all the brackets and hardware. it all bolted in except for one of the lines, i dont remember if it was the pressure or the return line. now i have no problems with leaks or noise, and the saginaw is noticebly stronger.

only if you find a ford van with either a 351m or a 400m. you have to pull all the brackets and hardware off the van motor and one of the power steering lines. it cost me less than $50.00 for everything. i think you can purchase an adapter so you can use you're stock lines? i almost bought a rebuilt pump from napa, it's a heavy duty pump that has saginaw internals. it is a direct bolt on. don't know if it is even available anymore.

looked it up on napa it's pt# nsp816795, looks to be available. i know it was about 8 moths ago. you can get it for a little over a hundred bucks. my opinion is the stock pump isn't even worth the time to diagnose. even when they "work" they're still noisy and weak.

gave up on pump converting it saginaw that should fix it
When I got my 78 bronco back in about 88. The backside of the pump went to leaking bad. I took it off and apart. As you pull the plastic cover off. Their is a seal and it is thin. I went and took the seal off coated the groove -put the seal back on-covered it with sealer and put it back together and have not had any trouble with it since(knock on wood)
