OK, so the key switch in the tailgate does not make your window go down.

You haven't started your truck in three months.

You want to know if the engine needs to be running for the rear window to work, and if not why the rear window does not go down by way of the key switch.

I don't know if in a '78 if the engine needs to be running. Well, it if that were the case, it would not need to be RUNNING, but the ignition key would have to be turned to the accessory, on or run position. Frankly I doubt it. Although that is the case with the in dash switch on the newer broncs. So you could try turning the ignition switch to on and then go test the tailgate switch.

The rear window takes a fair amount of juice from the battery to run. Is your battery in good condition? If you have not started your truck in three months, it may need to be recharged. DO your headlights shine brightly?

It's possible that a previous owner removed it for some reason but 78/79 Bronco have an in-cab switch for the tailgate window that is be located above the radio & next to the heater & A/C controls. It will put the window either up or down so long as the key is in the "acc" or "on" position, the engine does *not* need to be running to do this. The switch may have gone bad at some point & been removed but never replaced but they all came w/one when they rolled off the assembly line. The harness connections should still be there even if the switch isn't so you ought to be able to just replace the switch & boogie on down the road.

If that stuff has been ripped out it can be a mess to deal with, even so the wiring *should* still be there unless for some bizarre reason the guy when & hacked out chunks of the harness. Unfortunately if it's all just a rats nest it'll be hard to identify the specific connector or wires that go to the window switch, but either way it *should* be there next to the heat/AC controls and it shouldn't be *too* hard to find it in the mess since there really isn't anything else in the radio/heater panel that uses an actual connector. You should be able to locate it pretty easily unless the guy hacked the connector off and you're just dealing with a big mass of wires.

As far as my 88' right now a good tailgate w/glass is what I need most. I'm getting ready to start in on an half-door project once I pickup a decent welder but F-truck/Bronco doors are pretty easy to come by and I have access to a couple dozen at the yard just down the road. A good tailgate is a whole different issue :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

The rear window is designed to work only with the ignition on or at accessory, from the window switch in the cab (as others have said). However it will work with the key in the rear tailgate, without having the ignition on. This is obviously so that a key is required (somewhere) in order for the window to move.

If the window won't work from the tailgate key switch, then something is wrong. Check to confirm that the tailgate is completely closed first, since the window won't work if it's ajar, then check the fuse panel for a blown fuse.....
