Pinion Depth Ford 9

Getting ready to install a new ring and pinion but have a question about pinion depth. The Pinion I took out was marded +0 /1.038 with a .019 shim. The new pinion is marked 1.010 and no +/- on it. Any idea where to start? And I dont have a pinion depth setting tool, thanks for any help.

I can't help ya here., but your local driveline shop could walk you thru it.

Better yet., let them set the shims/backlash with the white media they use for that.

When they're done., simply slide/bolt it in place., push the axles back in., bolt-up., & ready to go.

Thanks Bully, I did go down to my local differential shop had to pick up a few parts anyways. Talked to him about the measurements on the Ford 9 inches and his answer is, he never trusts the measurements to many variables and your just not sure where they are measureing. Best way to do it without a pinion depth tool is to set it up and check gear pattern. If its wrong either add or remove shims based on the gear pattern. Which is really simple on the 9 inch, don't even have to take off the pinion nut, just remove the 5 screws add or remove your shim and check again. Worked great for me, got the pattern right dropped it in and not a growl or a wine out of it. I always like to try and do my own work, at times might ***** up more than I fix and sometimes cost me more but thats all part of the learning process......but I get it right more times then wrong.......
