I have '74 with a rebuilt Motorcraft carb. Also have a new fuel pump. Only way it will start from cold start is to prime carb. Otherwise fuel pump doen't do it. Once warm it will re-start. I need to know why this is and how I should fix it. What are your thoughts on putting in an electric fuel pump and what recommendations do you have?

Hay Jerry..,

You don't need an elect. pump.

The fuel pump doesn't supply raw gas for starting...the accelerator pump does that.

Look down the (air horn) throat of carb. (with eng. off) & look for strong streams of fuel squirting into throat, while operating throttle by hand.

If sporadic., or non-existant., your accelerator pump is malfunctioning.

How does it run otherwise...??? Need more info.

Thanks Bully Bob, that was one of my suspicions. Simple $25.00 rebuild kit should should take care of that. Then I can get to the many other minor "things to do" on it list. When it is running it runs great. Due to the age of it I always have something to do on it. Jerry.....

Electric fuel pumps are very nice, though. Before I went EFI, I ran one for about 8 years. Very dependable. Mine was an MSD.

You Also might need to use a choke on the carb.

I once had a rotted rubber hose between my gas tank and the metal fuel lines. The fuel pump couldn't get gas to the carb becuase it was pulling air.

If there is no gas in the bowl, the accellerator pump has nothing to act on.

Actually my car would start and run, but suffered from fuel starvation at 50 mph.
