I just bought an 88 351 4x4, everything runs great but if i sit at idle in gear for more than a minute or so, the engine will all of a sudden it will hickup a little and drop rpms and die, if you give it gas before it dies its fine, and after it dies, the engine has no problem firing right back up

Welcome to BroncoZone!

Please post in your sig file info about your rig such as year, engine, carb or EFI and any mods etc. so that we can be more specific in helping you.

For example I don't know if you have a carb, or EFI. The response would be greatly different.

In the mean time, I would give her a tuneup, or at least take a look at the tuneup parts and decide if they need replacing.

Then fill in your sig file with the vehicle information. Yes there are electronic components that can affect idle, and ways to check for them, but it does vary from year to year.

You also should check for codes.. if you don't know how, we will walk you through it.

ive noticed so far im only getting like 7-8 mpg
Ouch! ! !

Yep... that's where I was when I first got mine, well I was at 6-7mpg

A tuneup made a huge difference, brought me up to 11.

Both my plugs and air filter looked like they were original equipment.

Just yesterday, I replaced my TPS, and cleaned the throttle body and we have come to the realization that our truck NEVER ran as she should have. I guess (hope) that I am now with the rest of guys who have well maintained trucks, 12 city 14 - 15 highway.

it is possible you have some dirty injectors. its a little bit of a long job but cheap parts to replace and clean the injectors. You should be able to trigger then with a 9v battery and spray some cleaner through them. id say its possible there is some build up and around idle you have a leaky injector or 3 causing your problem. it could be so many things really. Your idle air control valve could be okay but slow and or sticky. it could even be emissions related like your egr valve. I had mine causing some interesting problems.

last but not least to add would be TB gasket. Ive seen them get sucks in a bit so they leak(not noticable from the outside). again a few $$$ but would be worth it in my mind.

welcome

Yep Like Shift1313 said it could be all of those things, or a little bit of a few of them.

Could be the MAP sensor.

But unless you just want to change a bunch of parts so that you know they are new, then pull codes and see where it leads you.

Have fun!
