I am currently in Iraq but was able to buy a 69 Bronco back home for 1500 bucks. In my opinion i got a great deal. I am going to take the time and buuild it right. I get home in 2 months, but have some questions now so that i can start planning.

I have a 79 F-150 with a 351M in it. Should i swap it all out of the F-150 and throw it in the Bronco? How much of it will bolt in? I know there is a constant debate on the 351 to 302, but if i am going to do this i will build the 351 before putting it in.

Can i pull the power steering out of the F-150 and put it in the bronco? Will the transmission and the transfer case out of the f-150 fit? I know i want the 4 speed on the floor.

I am from Maine, so not a huge amount of rock crawling going on, but excellent trail riding.

I appreciate any help or advise with this. I have built the larger broncos before. This is my first small one and boy am i happy. My wife isnt. Oh well. I added a picture also. Not a bad deal for 1500.

Thanks again from Iraq

I believe a '79 has a Dana 20,Dana 44 front, and Ford 9' rear, like the E.B. you just got.The only advantage I see is that if they were in better condition,or the F-150 had a c-6,or the 351 ,all of which you could use.I dont like the extra width, but some guys want those full size axles.Let me know some of the stuff you'll need when you get back...I'm not rich but I'll donate some parts to an E.B. brother serving Iraq any time,I'll even pay the shipping...good luck.BANDIT <)

Oh,I forgot about the power steering,I'm not sure but I know f-100 are being used, also for the C-6 you have to make the tunnel cover cut out bigger.

Thanks Bandit. The information is worth more than any part any day. I am going to leave the front and rear in the 69 bronco. I plan on a frame off restore. There is going to be a 4 inch suspension so that i am able to run 33's. It is something i am very much looking forward too. I will continue to post picks of the bronc as i go through it.

Thanks again, i really appreciate it.

Yah, I agree with Bandit...

A lot of blood, sweat & tears for really no gain...& a veh. with less value than when you started.

You've got the best "off-the-shelf" OHV ever built..! Clean it up & get everything working & it will do everything you want it to do...including save your marriage..!! ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Get the EB power steering factory set-up (with all the $$ you saved) & take the wife out to a nice dinner....

Ah, .....life is "grand"...! :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Thanks for your service....stay safe out there...!!

Good luck bro

The 351M from the '79 is not the same as the 351 Winsor that is near a direct bolt in to the 302. If you want the four-speed you can bolt it up using adapters from www.advanceadapters.com

Can i pull the power steering out of the F-150 and put it in the bronco?
You can retro-fit the steering box to your Bronco with many mocifications. It would be chaper and easier to purchase a stock type setup or complete kit from one of the vendors.

Will the transmission and the transfer case out of the f-150 fit?  I know i want the 4 speed on the floor.
The transmission and transfercase from the 79 were never stock to the early bronco but many people use them since they are bomb-proof. If you want to use them there is no problem. Some adjustments to the crossmember might need to be made.

Thanks guys, this is really helping. A few questions though: I have decided to stick with the 302, but i know i want to change the transmission and the transfer. Will the Transmission and the transfer go onto the 302? I know this is a dumb question, but i have never gotten this in depth on a rebuild and this will be my baby.

When i get home there will be plenty of picks.

I am not sure the Transmission or the transfer in the F-150, i know that the transmission is either the Warner T-84 or the new process 435. Are both of these good transmissions.

if it does bolt up do i need to put a body lift on?

thanks again

My wife and I are definately going out to dinner when i get home, thanks to you

First thing I would do is check to see if you have the Dana 30 or 44 front end. If you have the 30, then I would take the time and spend the money on swapping out and cutting down the truck 44 because you will have made a $500 improvement on your vehicle right there. Then, if the axle doesnt already have disks, you can do the quick and easy Chebby disk conversion.

The NP is the lowest geared trans out there and one of the best. I have never dealt w/ the warner, but I have also never heard anything bad about them either. But if you can, swap out the stock 3 speed and put the 4 speed in there, it will be a big improvement, and it won't beat your vehicle as bad on the trails with that lower first gear. Definatly worth a look. I think the only thing you will have to do is move or make a new cross member because it might be longer than the current trans-xfer combo currently in there.

Good luck and thanks for serving man!!

I am pretty sure i have the 30 in the front, so i will definately look into putting the front end from the f-150 in there. Great idea about the front discs also, i wouldnt have thought about that until too late.

I am going to do a 4 speed in the bronco, i am just not sure which one. If the 79 has the NP then i am going with that one. If it has the Warner i will look at my options. I should be able to move the cross member fairly easily.

Do you know which adapter i will need if it is the NP. I looked at Advanced Adaptors and wasnt quite sure what i was looking at. Our internet is really slow over here and doesnt bring up full pages sometimes. Hey, we have it though.

Thanks

We are kicking ass over here also.

Your 79 has the NP435 4 speed and NP205 t-case. I have both in my 68 Bronco and for the price I wouldn't run anything else. Very strong setup.

The D44 in the F150 is a high pinion (reverse rotation gear set) and works great on lifted Early Broncos due to driveline angle. Most cut the passenger side 6" on the full size D44 to get back to the early Bronco stock width. Then center the axle under the rig, grid off the wedges on the axles and move them in and weld back on. Others keep the full size and run inset rims and move the wedges inwards. same on the full size 9", cut the leaf spring pads and move them inwards. I run 12" wide rims on my 68 and this puts me almost as wide as a full size. I'm going to use axles out of my 77 F150 soon. I'll run 10" wide rims to help reduce the width. By the time I'm done it will only be 1" wider on each side than it is now.

Thanks everyone

From what I have read in other forums, etc. is that the power steering colum with tilt from a '78 or '79 F150 will fit the EB with very little modifications. I think the only thing you have to do with the steering sector is to add a mounting plate on the frame where it mounts up. I think one of the bolts it uses misses the frame rail because of its height.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have made a few decisions. I am going to pull the body and strip it. My first concentration is going to be getting the suspension the way i want it. I am going to sandblast the frame and undercoat it. i will then rebuild the engine and am considering stroking it. There was a great article in the recent 4 wheeler mag about the 302, going to 500 horse.

once this is all done and i change over to the NP trans and new transfer. Then all i need to do is put the body back on, some body work and fire it up. Sounds so easy doesnt it. Maybe it will be.

Looking forward to being back in maine. Only 30 days to go and then my bronco and i are united.

Thanks again

Zach

I wouldn't try too terribly hard to get up to 500 hp. You gotta drop a lot of $$ to get it there and then with an NP435, you will be wasting money cause that tranny isn't set up for that kind of HP. You would be better off going around 200-300 HP range and spending the extra you would have on that engine and put it into a set of lockers, gears, a cage, lift, etc. any one of those.

Just my .02 on that

Yup, the 435 shifts like a big truck, slow and firm. Its one of the best for off road use cause of the granny low 1st gear. If you are looking to fly down the road stick with a 3 speed or if cash isn't an issue go with the NV4500.
