My c6 was a little slow to hook up in the morning and shifted back and forth alot on steep hills, So I replaced the modulater and changed fluid and filter which were both clean. Seemed O.K. for a little while, But now third slips in and out. More out than in and you could cook on the floor boards. What do you think?

Sounds like it is time for a rebuild. You could get one from a junkyard and rebuild the one that is now in the truck. A rebuild would cost in the area of $800.00 to $1000.00. The best thing about having it rebuilt by a shop is that it is completely cleaned in a washer before reassembly. Call around to local shops for some prices, usually they will have one in stock and you can do a 1 for 1 swap. Also add a transmission cooler to it, that will be a great improvement under all conditions.

Good luck,

:)>-

Im curious why is changing the fluid a big mistake ? amos moses have you ever had the valve body out of a C6 ? Do you feel comfortable taking off the tranny pan and removing the valve body ? Mine didnt have 2nd gear for the longest time finally took it apart and found that in the valve body on the end there is a plunger in the body with a spring behind it will the spring had broken and the plunger wouldnt seal off anymore , Apparently this was important . I bought a TCI trans **** valve body kit from jegs its liek $25 . Very easy to install . All was good after that shifts very nice usually if the clutches are going to **** the fluid will be way nasty and burnt . If it moves the front pump is working its a gear pump if it goes around and the gear isnt broken then it will pump fluid . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Fluid wasn't burnt whenI changed it. The fluid and screen was almost too clean as if it was changed just before I bought the truck. The truck was good around town except for the hills. The truck shifted up and down irractically. I thought it was the modulator. So I changed it and did the fluid and filter. I don't have a problem checking anything if I had a good manual, I would give it a shot. I've seen rebuilts for like 600 on Ebay. It's time and money. I have the money for that , But not the time. 1000 bucks to have someone do it is a little steep. Worth every penny, But too expensive for me right now. My son and I pulled the interior and carpets out of the 79 last Sunday. We have a few holes to patch up. The 79 is the winter rig and taking priority. The 78 is going to have to be a winter project. I just would like to have her back on the road in the spring. I don't have a garage to work in, So it's a p.i.t.a. to get big projects done. Patience is something I'm constantly struggling with. With out the help of the lottery I'm guessing it will take me 3 years to get the 78 restored to what I woud like. That and about 20 grand. Thanks for the input about the tranny. Who has a detailed manual on the C6?

Haynes puts out a real good book that takes you step by step through the rebuild process of a C6. This is the manual I used to rebuild mine and have had no problems with it for 5 years now. Only suggestion is to not remove any seals from any part until you rebuild it and replace the seals one for one. There are couple of seals that you will get more then one type for (flat verses lip) and if you don't use the right one, you could run into some problems.

What I was getting at was if the fluid was clean then the clutches are probably in good shape you will see black stuff in the bottom of the pan usually if there was a problem . The valve body controls the shifts by directing the fluid pressure to the clutches if its not right it could miss a gear like mine did it would shift right from 1st to 3rd no second gear ever until I took it apart and found that broken spring on one of the plungers in the valve body so you could be having the same problem just with the 3rd gear end of it . That valve body kit from jegs is $25 then just the time to pull the pan , remove the valve body and install the kit and reasemble . So back to what I was getting at you might be able to fix all your problems for $25 and worst case if it doesnt work you will be useing that valve body when the tranny is rebuilt anyway so not like it would be a waste of money and if it works your back on the road cheaply :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
