Hey guys,

After reading a fair amount about the differences in the lockers and the spool, I have come up with a plan. Tell me if you think I am making a big mistake, or do you think that it might work ok. I have manual locking hubs on my bronco. I am going to put a spool in both the front and the back. 90% of my driving will be on the dirt. When I am on the highway, I will only be in 2 wheel drive anyway. It will fit into my budget a lot better. I was looking at the chart that one of you gave a link to about tire size and gear ratio. I am going to check mine and see, but I think I am going to have to change it. If I am going to use the spool system, do I have to get anything else except the ring and pinion gears along with the spool? Thanks....David

Get a ring and pinion install kit so you get all the bushings and bearings with it. What size tire do you want to run?

I use 5:89 with 38's cause I run 99% dirt. Off road you will want as low ratio as you can get. If I was to run 35's I'd use 4:88.

Spools are nice cause they're stong and locked in 100%. Problem here is the front end will be tough to steer needing hydraulic assist. The rear driving ariound corners will always be clurping tires, wearing them down and can break an axle shaft on concrete if you run wide tires and give too much gas. Locker only engages with torque and are only a few bucks more.

If you don't intend on this being a daily driver, then sure, that would be the economical way to do it. Like 'holics said though, on the road you will have some problems going through tires though. That is the nature of the beast. Mine is my every day rig, so I went with ARBs. Expensive, yes, but I have the ability to go full locking anytime I want on the trails and go completely open on the road.

You will be tearing up your rear end and tires in turns on the road. The outside wheel needs to go faster then the inside wheel. Spooling will prevent the slip that is necesary to allow this which will also give you some real crappy driving characteristics. Go for lockers that you cn control from the cab.

Good luck,

:)>-

Question, when it comes to steering on the dirt, will the dual spools work ok?

Shouldn't be a problem on dirt. Just a problem on pavement.
