I just bought an 89 bronco and Im trying to make it a little nicer than what it is now. However everything I am trying to do is what I have picked up out of books and from tv...Ive got no one to teach me how to do the stuff I'd like. So instead of posting about 8 threads I figgured Id post one with multipul questions, any help is appreceated.

1)Lift: the guy I bought the truck from put a 2 inch block lift on the back...no lift on the front. Is this bad for 4x4? should I take the lift off or put one on the front? If I should add one to the front is there a block lift like lift for the front (something where I dont have to replace the coils; college student budget)?

2)Body putty: can you putty over top of primer or does it have to be bare metal? whats the best stuff to use?

3)Paint: I would like to paint over the fadded 17 year old ugly-ass red paint. I was think of just hitting it with a flat black primer and leaving it at that (trust me that will look 1000% better than it is now). Can I paint over the existing paint once everything is smothed out or do I have to sand all the paint off?

4)4x4: the 4 wheel drive is a push button, but there is no light telling me when its on, how do I tell?

5)Oil: I dumped the oil, and I dont think it has been changed in 2 years. It was black as asphalt and looked like I could use it for sand paper. What kind of damage would this cause, how can I fix it? Also, after I put a new filter on and fresh oil in I ran it for about 15 minutes pulled out the dip stick and it was a solid black again, should I keep changing the oil and filter until I get a nice color out?

6)power stearing: makes a straining sound when I make turns, fulid is full no leaks from what I can tell, is this bad?

7)Ideal strangness: After driving or reving the engine for a minute after you let off the gas the rpm will drop to between 6-4 when this happens the engine makes a very low pitched grown (like its struggling). most of the time it will pull itsself out of this stick and jump to 8-9 rpm, but sometimes if it drops below 5 it will stall if I dont give it gas.

well thats all ive got for now...thank you much for your help

Well, The 4x4 and low range lights are on the right side of the steering wheel along the same strip as the right signal light icon. The bulbs are either burnt out or are loose just take that apart. The power steering on my bronco sounds bad too, but it should be okay [-o< (i hate blowing money on parts, not cool stuff). The low idle could be a bad egr valve. You should have the paint done by a pro, it adds value and won't look like sh*t. Change the oil and the engine should be okay, do the filter as well. Take the blocks out of the back and lift it properly, it will save your suspension. There, I think I answered all of your questions, I have a 1990 and it was in worse shape. If you need a copy of all the parts I replaced (yours should be coming up too) let me know. :)>-

Howdy and welcome to owning a bronco! Your checking account will never be the same again...

Do you hear any clicking relays when you push the 4x4 button? Go to neutral and after pushing the 4x4, push 4x4 low range. Wait a moment and start to drive. You will know if you are in low range as the truck will only go half speed.

Ten to one is that you 4x4 shift motor is dead though.

Pretty easy to drain the transfer case fluid and refill with two quarts of fresh Mercon ATF. A 10 dollar suction gun at a parts store makes it a ten minute job.

The oil goes black pretty quick anyway, as you never get all of it out, but one more change couldnt hurt.

Use your new suction gun and empty the power steering on the back of the pump. You get about a third of the fluid and then refill with some fresh Mercon ATF. Do this two or three more times till the fluid looks good. I have found this quiets many a loud ford pump.

Check your computer for codes. Easy to do yourself with this link and we can go from there.
