I have a '74 bronco and the J-shift T-case keeps popping out of 4L and 2H (the two forward positions). seems to stay in 4H OK. Is this a linkage adjustment issue or what? Any help or info would be appreciated.

Hi Staci..!

"Is this a linkage adjustment issue or what?"

More often that not, this is the case with the "J" shifter. The shifter itself often wears out.

Pull the boot/cover & have a look.

It can be re-built ---or--- a good time to go to the "twin-stick" shifter.

Worst case scenario.., the ball/spring/indent system is amiss.....but these are pretty bullet-proof.

Had the exact same prblem out of my 74. Simple fix for me, it was just the shifter was worn out. Put a heavy duty shifter in it and it has worked great!

Thanks for the info, but I think I have a bigger problem....I popped the inspection cover the other day and 6 roller bearings fell out along with a ton of shavings and a longer semi-cylindrical mangled piece of metal (a pin of some kind?)!!!! Not sure where it all came from - all the teeth look fine. I guess I'm looking at a T-case overhaul.

YEP...!

Those needle bearings (13) can't come out (at least the short-fatter ones) W/O seperating the input & output shafts.

There's also approx. 50 longer skinny needle bearings in there..., that could be what your seeing.

Did this just happen., or did you buy it already malfunctioning.?

D-20 is usually pretty tough......
