hub & gears?

I just took apart the front 4wd hub on what I think is a dana 44 axle. It is missing a the flat "c" style clip that helps hole the main body (?) to the gear that slides over the axle shaft. This is not the standard "c clip" that goes in the grove at the end of the axle and not the big round c clip that hold the main body in the hub. It was together without it. Is this something that I have to have? part is no longer available through ford and i CAN'T SEEM TO FIND IT ANYWHERE ON THE WEB. I cna't even find a picture of it. In the picture the c clip I need would go behind the main body (right side) and hold a gear that is not pictured on, then that whole assmbly wold go in to the hub and secured with the 3" sized round c clip and also the c lip that goes on the end of the axle shaft.

Some one please advise me
