Hello.

I just bought a 79, and was disappointed to find out that the horn didn't work when I bought it.

Upon inspection, taking off the aftermarket wheel, I found out about the springs in the steering column and sounded the horn.

So it works, if I have a screwdriver to reach the spring..

One wire is blue, the other yellow.

Is it okay to make my own switch between the two wires to manually set off the horn?

Or could messing with those wires ***** something up I don't know about?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

If you don't have cruise control, it would work. If you have cruise control then the connection is used for more than one purpose. I believe that you have the same steering wheel as the 80 - 86. If that is a tiny brass spring, it is probably missing a piece. You can probably still get what is called a brush to replace that one. It has a brass button connected on the end of the spring to make contact with the steering wheel. If the button is missing it will not make so the horn will naturally not work. You might be able to still get one from a Ford dealer or find a wheel to take it out of in a junk yard.

Good luck,

:)>-

I just had to laugh because I've HAD this problem with 78/79's in the past. My solution was low-tech and admittedly crude, I just bought a small mushroom switch at Napa, ran new wires to the horn & was done with it. Mass was touchy about stuff like that for inspections too. Later on when I replaced the steering wheel with a Grant or something similar I fixed it properly but to get thru inspection a new switch was the quickest & easiest solution for me. Might be different today but back when *I* was buying aftermarket steering wheels they usually cheaped out and just sold you the wheel, you had to shell out extra $$$ for a horn kit. Might be that something like this happened with yours.
