I had a jeep that I had to replace the fuel tank on due to rust. I had the same issue, It would start and idle, but God forbid you touch the skinny pedal. Being a fan of the easy way out, I let it idle in my yard for about three hours. Never had another problem. Being me, and I'm still not sure how, I got crap up in the fuel lines when I changed the tank that had to burn out. If this is your problem, I'd replace the fuel filter shortly after the idle time.

Also check your Clutch Interlock Safety Switch thingy....If you can start it off the starter relay....Its a big culprit.

ok bout the idling it will only idle for bout 30 secs maybe a little more before it dies even without touching the gas it still dies out.

Yes matt i have already reset the fuel inertia switch. as for the throttle body i was told that mine is a throttle body setup but not exactly sure on that one sorry if you would like i can take pics of engine if that will help.

ok today looks like it might be good so i am going to try to get some work in on the bronco with update toite if i get something accomplished lol

dont worry on the he/she things i was just busts your balls guys i know most women dont know shit bout vehicles no biggy i just like to correct mistakes is all lol

with the fuel injection, TBI basically means you have 2 or 4 fuel injectors mounted in your throttle body, in which case your TB is opening up toward the hood. With multiport you have 1 injector per intake runner, most likely these will be facing up towards the hood coming out of the intake and will all be connected by a common fuel rail. I would be willing to be its multiport because ive never seen a ford truck TBI and my 86 was multi.

good luck with the work and we'll be waiting patiently for the updates :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> like good boys

Ill have to re-read through your post but did you replace the Idle air valve on the TB? Sometimes the idle air ports on the throttle body get clogged with buildup, also the gasket on the TB/intake can **** air making idle nearly impossible, just a few things for you to look at while your messing with it today. the TB gasket is probably $5.

Hey boys, finally got a chance to do a little work not much but here is the scoop so far. I was able to get the sending unit in the tank but when my brother was helping to take it out he broke a little part and now it is giving us problems, nothing major though.

Next i checked over all the grounds going to the ignition and they all seem to be fine had to clean the ground to the brain good going to look into getting a new end that connects to the battery on that ground but at the moment that is fine. Have tried a couple things to get it started but still no luck there will keep trying i am not going to give up main thing is to get it running even if i have to start it by crossing the solenoid i will lol. I am thinking that if i cant get the ignition figured out then i will just bypass that and go with a toggle and push button to start it but i will cross that road when i get there.

Again thanks a million you guys have been awesome

PS. also tried to get the codes but could not get it to read anthing except 11 so not sure there well I will keep you all updated when i can hopefully I will get more time this week to mess with it atleast get the tank in and see if it will run right then also is there a way to bypass the fuel inertia switch if it is bad or do i just go get a new one? Thank You!!

I'm too tired to rearead this thread, but I seem to recall that you can hear the pumps prime. IF that's the case, your inertial switch is permitting power through to the pumps. Sure you could pull the wires out of the back of it, and splice them together to bypass it, but IMO that would be a dangerous thing to do. That is a safety switch to turn off the fuel pumps, should you run into a tree or something and snap a fuel line, or otherwise cause a leak in it. Should there be sparks flying, that switch could save your purty little ****.

You stated that you pulled codes, and you got 11, that's fine, but did you get 11 twice?

When you do the KOEO codes, first you get the "on demand" codes, and then you get the "continuous memory" codes.

Since yours is an '86, you'll need a code reader or an analog voltmeter, did you use one?

Matt and I participated in a thread recently about the ignition switch, I'll see if I can find it, and post a link to it.

OK boys here's a stupid for you. Will the iginition work even if the sending unit is not in? just curios on that one not totally sure i would think that it work but who knows stranger things have been known to happen right.

I will def. look into the NSS as a problem but need the rain to let up since i dont have a garage to work in so right now it is a little muddy to be climbing under a vehicle if i dont really need to. Thank God it is not my everyday driver.

Well I will keep you all posted on the progress Thanks

Thanks for staying in touch.

We like building relationships, so when you do get a chance to work on your beast, let us know of your progress. When you run into a stumbling block, let us know and if we can help we will, and if we can't we'll stumble with you... deal?

Just remember.. your truck won't start with out the gas tank in it. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

If you don't get out to play... enjoy the summer anyway.

Hey Boys >

Well I actually got to work on the BEAST!!!!! Yippie :D/

Hey Joe, I got the gas tank in and hopfully I wont have to take it back out since this sending unit I can actually hear running so all is good there finally [-o< .

As for the ignition problem it is still there checked all the wiring under the dash and inside the steering column and nothing seems to be loose or disconnected there. Also checked the clutch switch (neutral safety switch in manual tranny) and that all seems to be fine too. I tried the reset on the fuel inertia switch and that didnt do anything either so when it comes to the ignition i am at a lose bout ready to just bypass that and put in a push button and toggle switch to solve that problem so that i can hopefully gt it on the road [-o< .

Now on the fuel problem I know that the sending unit is running i can hear that and i know that it is pumping fuel out of the tank ( one of the hoses came off when we were putting the tank back in and didnt realize it until we tried to start it and was pumping fuel on the ground lol  that stuff is too expensive to be doing that) anyway I can also hear the high pressure pump engage also but am not sure if the fuel is getting there or not ran out of daylight and time to check that tonight will get to that tomorrow sometime. Up till that point though I was able to get it to start up by crossing the selinoid and using starter fluid and it would run for about 30 seconds but no more than that. :((

Well I hope that tomorrow night I will have some more news for you and good news at that but until then Happy Muddin!!!! <)

broncogurl86, IKve been following this thread, and Bronco joe is spot on in providing you excellent advice. You may be able to find some useful info in the How-to & TechArticles forum, under my link to Miesk5's Homepage. I know it's a real PITA, but you're goi ng to have to check every wire and ground in your entire fuel system, from the new tank to the engine, before you finger the problem out.. There is some great info at Autozone.com on the general circuits, too. the primary rule of thumb to get your motor running is this: you need spark and fuel, plain and simple. Make double sure you're getting proper spark at the correct timing, then check the fuel pressure coming into the fuel rail at the engine. I've often found wires in the main engine harness that were chaffed enough to short out, as well as wires along the frame rail that were rubbed and shorted out. I can also tell you from experience, that a garage is going to thoroughly inspect the entire system, but it will cost you a hella lot. you sonud like someone that is willing to do that on your own time, and save the time and $$$. Please keep us posted with your progress or frustrations, JSM84

GOOD NEWS :D/ :D/ :D/

Hey boys!!!!!!!

Well since so many of you seem to be keeping up with my never-ending battle with getting this beast up and running and on the road again I finally have good news

She is up and running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D/ :D/

As the ignition is now on a push button switch turn the key then push a button and she fires right off. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Now the main problem the fuel system well here is a thing to consider DO NOT LET SOMEONE ELSE TAKE A PART OFF  AND THEN TELL YOU HOW TO PUT IT BACK ON LOL. We started at the pressure pump on the frame rail and we got gas on one end not the other so we flipped the pump round and OMG it worked gas going everywhere hooked the fuel line back up and turned the key a few times to get pressure in the lines and she started right up.

Well now all she needs is a bath to get all the dust off her and a nice coat of wax and she will shine up really nice.

Thank you all for all the time and effort that you put into helping me get the beast back on the road even though most of it was error with what people were telling me here at the house all i can say is thank you so much!!!!!

Oh... Lady I am ssoooooo happy for you, I am still smiling!!! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

There is no doubt in my mind that you are a better mechanic than many. You had a truck with multiple issues, and you either fixed them, or recognised them and created a workaround. Good for you!

I think that it is great when people think out of the box.

IT was a pleasure helping you work through your issues, in part because you have a good sense of humor, but to a great extent because you took the time to be clear about what your issues were, what you had already done, and what your questions were.

You have a wonderful ability to communicate well. I hope that when you have time, that you hang around and make recommendations and give advice to those who have less knowledge, or understanding of their particular issues than you.

Now.. save up some money so you can put gas in your baby and take her/him for a ride!

So broncogurl86 your news is good news to me. Glad I could help somewhat, and that you got your baby ready to be back on the road, or trails.

Enjoy the weekend,

BroncoJoe19

Well Boys,

Since you all have given me some good advice I thought that I would let you all know that I was able to take the beast for her FIRST mountain ride since Feb. when she originally broke down on me. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I put bout 80 miles on her that day and she seemed to run absolutely fine the entire time with the exceptions of a few glitches.

1. for some reason she likes to stall out but she will fire right back up not sure what that could be but will figure it out

2. gas gauge and oil gauge still dont work think i need to check all the grounds going to the gauges but dont have the time right now to mess with that so i just estimate how much gas i have and carry fuel in the vehicle with me lol

After the mountain ride i drove it round town a couple times and last night on the way to a friends house she stalled out and would not start back up well i got out and looked and sure enough there was a nice big puddle of gas under the vehicle. One of the lines going to the high pressure fuel pump got jarred loose so here i was fixin it on the side of the highway which was fun guys stopping seeing if I need help which by now you boys should know I dont need heheheh

But all is better know she is back on the road now i really need to save up some money so i can do a all day mountain ride with some friends but with gas prices here of $4.10 a gallon it is going to be a pretty penny to go and hopefully nothing breaks down. well hope you are all enjoying your 4x4 and summer!!!!

Happy Muddin'
