I just bought a 1969 Bronco, It has been sitting in the AZ sun since 1978 with no top on and 2 full tanks of gas, so I have a TON of work to do. Any suggestions as to how to clean the laquer thinner(used to be gas) out of my gas tanks. Thanks, I'm new to the EB's and may have gotten in over my head with this one.

I had such a hassle with crud comming out of my tanks, when I first bought my bronco,I bought some type of tank flushing stuff the guy at the auto parts recommended.I think if I knew what I'd go through I'd just buy a new quality 23 gallon tank.Mine kept plugging up fuel filters for a while. <)

On my rising rust project, it had a rusty tank in it as well. I talked to quite a few eb guys and they all advised me to spring for a new 23 gallon tank. That is what I did and I am really glad of it. No hassle, just clean gas...

Does the 23 gallon tank substitute for both tanks, or just the one? This is my first project aside from a vw bug when i was 15. Any information from anyone with some experience on any topic with the broncos will be of alot of help. How about wiring harness's? should i go with oem or something like painless or ez wiring? Everything on this truck needs work(replaced) the best part on it is the battery(new)....it drove 50 yards into the garage from the trailer and i dont think it'll be moving anytime soon.

Take to radiator shop....they will boil them clean... or do yourself with muratic acid & water.

Prob. need to pay attention to the lines, filters, rubber hoses & the switch-over valve as well.

FYI - I have a 1970 Bronco, purchased it new in fall of 1969. The main stock fuel tank started rusting and gave the fuel filter fits until I had it cleaned out and coated at the local radiator shop - a few years later it started leaking, I then replaced it with a new metal tank (sometime in the 80's) only for the same thing to happen a few years later. I pulled the tank and found it was again coated with crud and rust, the sending unit was so rusted and coated I was amazed that it even worked. The auxilary stock tank (fiberglass) never had a problem of any kind and is still being used without leaking or clogging the filter, I pulled the sending unit from it, and it looks like new.

Long winded, but my point is buy a fiberglass tank - stay away from the metal one, it'll only give you grief later down the road. (My personal opinion, others may disagree however, probably if your going to do some real rock bashing, you may want a steel tank!!) :)>-

Oh no,you can still put in a second tank on the side if you want, but it always seems to get in the way of upgrades.I took my second stock tank out.I did'nt think those quality 23 gallons gave problems, but I dont have one yet,I still have the stock ten,it'll get you to the corner and back,I think you can get a modern second tank in 12 or 13 gallons. <)

I've never personally tried this, but I've heard it works.

If you don't need the tank for a while, strap it in the bed of your pickup with a bunch of steel balls from ball bearings inside the tank. Supposedly after rolling around in there for a few weeks it'll clean the tank out.

I have removed the tanks and steamed out the front tank...the rear is pretty rusted and have decided to go with a poly replacement....will install along with new sending units, lines, and selector valve, and filter just to be sure I dont have any rust issues. Thanks for the help guys
