front drums

I am replacing my brake shoes, wheel cylinders and spring kits on my 74 bronco i have finished with the rear, but cannot get the front drums off. i cant tell if they are just rusted on there or if i have to remove anything before the drum slides off. also, i have run into a problem on the hub. there are six bolts around the hub and i cant get them all out. 1 on the right side and 2 on the left are rusted in there and stripped out. any ideas on how to get these out? ive tried the irwin ***** extractors unsuccessfully.

I can't be any help on removing those 6 bolts, but they will have to come out to get the outer ring off. After that, you will have to remove a retaining ring and pull out the inner hub assembly, next you will have to remove the wheel nut and outer bearings, and finally the drum. You might as well buy new bearings, and while your at the part store to get them, pick up a Haynes repair manual #788 (just in case I left something out)

Ford Bronco front drum brakes ****! You really shoud think about changing to disc front brakes. This is one mod. I will be doing when I start on my bronco. As far as removing the drums it depends how bad you let the brakes get! Did they start grinding like I let mine do? If so I think you need to use the adjusting ***** behind the wheel and adjust it in to pull the linnings away from the drum and than start beating on the drum with a soft mallet all around, it is going to take some effort. As far as the screws on the hub well I'm not real sure. Start with some peneatrating fluid like liquid wrench and let it soak and than use a impact screwdriver with an allen head fitting. They should be allen head fittings. Maybe a little heat migt break them loose!

If your front drums are still OE, you may need a "swedging" tool.

The factory put a series of small crimps around the stud right at the face of the drum to hold the drum in place. These will need to be removed.

You will probably have a very hard time finding this tool, it looks kind of like a small hole saw and it fits right over the stud, you use a slow drill to turn the tool.

If you ahve any old school technicians, or restorers near you, they may be able to help you locate what you need.

Hi Here is my thoughts.

As long as you have the front drums off you should look at the axle u-joints. With everything apart now it really saves time to replace the u-joints now. Be a shame to have to take it all apart again in 6 months when you blow one. One of the better books that I have found is a 1968 Bronco 1969 Econoline and Club Wagon shop manual. The cover is a light green and was printed by Ford service publications. I found them online.Mine I found at a swap meet for 20 bucks. Good luck with your Bronco! SAYBYE

I had the same problem getting my front drums off on the rising rust project. I ended up heating up the drum, not hot hot, just good and warm, and then spraying it down with PB Blaster. I let it soak for about 30 minutes and used a rubber mallet and it really did not take that much after that. I am not sure which did it the best but I think it was the combination of PB and heat. Again, I did not get the drum real hot, just hot enough to get the metal to expand just a little. It was a little hotter that you would want to put up against your skin.

Hi Just reread your question, to get the bolts off Carefully drill the heads off. You said they were striped, I'm hopeing that you ment that the allen wrench part was striped. Take a look at a bolt that you have off so you know how deep you can drill. Take your time. You might be able to find new ones at a parts store. Or you can take one of your old one to a salvage yard. Most f-150s full size Broncos should be the same. Good Luck SAYBYE

If you are still having problems removing bolts or nuts that have been rusted on. The best way to break them loose is to use some PB penetrating oil...let sit for about an hour...than take a torch and heat the bolts/nuts/ up to a very high temp. Pour some water on the nut and this will help break the rust off. I have been using this trick on many of my rusted bolts/secrews..
