for those that have removed there AC unit

my truck came without an AC compressor or lines, so today I removed the radiator that the AC lines connect to and I was thinking of removing the unit on the firewall on the passenger side of the truck like some of you guys have done

question is, when removing that unit on the firewall, does the heater still work or do you have to give up that feature?

I also would need to cover the firewall with some sheet metal which is a pretty simple job.

I really dont want to lose the heater function, but freeing all that room and weight would be nice

How much of it do you do you plan on removing? The whole black heater housing? If you remove all that, I don't believe your heater will work. You could remove it and gut out all the AC parts, then fill whatever holes you create. Or get the heater box from a non AC truck

i tore mine out. may or may not have been a good idea. it really does free up alot of room. the black box on the passenger side contains the a/c accumulator and the fan. the heater is a seperate entity but the fan is needed to blow air through the heater core behind the glove box. so its kind of a catch 22. but to answer your question if you gut it you will not have a heater. i am going to install a portable one on the ceiling of my camper top that is easily removable via a power converter. its really your call but i am happy i did it. if you work on your engine it makes a world of difference.

i have never deleted it on a bronco but i know other vehicles you usually have to find an ac/non ac heater box cover that the fan mounts to and this is the easiest way. I had a friend do it the hard way by modifying his when he could have used a $10 one from a junkyard.

If your gonna go that far by taking the box completely out you will lose the heater function....But like illinoisbronco was saying a good portable will work...or try and find a non-a/c bronco or f-150 and snag the box...but good luck i have a non-a/c bronco and had to fix a crack in mine because i could'nt find one around here....but i guess i'm a little to far south for no a/c..... /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Think I have a pic of my HVAC removal:



I covered the holes in the fierwall with sheetmetal, and painted it with a blue color close to the original. There are two separate holes in the firewall, but I believe the fan cage and AC evaporator are contained in one unit (far left in pic/ closest to the fender). I don't ever need the heater down here in S. TX, so it was much easier to just bypass the system. There is now alot more room for that 460, JSM84
