I have a 90 Bronco with the E4OD... here is my issue... the transmission fluid smells bad, REALLY BAD... like makes me wanna puke... and every once and a while the truck wont go into gear... i remedy this problem by rocking the truck(getting out and pushing it) while it is still in park... some times this works some times it doesn't... also if i drive for more than an hour at a time the tranny smells... i'm sure it is on its way out and am going to replace it... i want to use it till its dead though... i don't know when the last fluid and filter change was done, if it was done... my question is, if i change the filter and fluid will the problem get worse or better, and should i even bother trying?

Gary,

Unless you like puking, I would suggest that you stop smelling the trans fluid.

Changin the fluid and filter will not make it worse, and may prolong your need to replace it.

I am curios, when rocking the truck while in park, does not work, what do you do?

get mad... lol... um.... i don't know... let it run for a bit.... sometimes bringing the rpms up to like 3000 and then letting them drop back to idle and shifting really fast makes it go... lol... it is diff every time...

Have you ever gottn trans deep in like a water crossing or something? if water gets in trans fluid the smell will damn near **** you(I work at a Junkyard). I say your tranny needs to be flushed and new oil and a filter put in. A FLUSH will cost around a 100 bucks. How many miles are on this beast? Anything over 150,000 and thats about it as far as the normal life of an E4OD. Hope that helps

I've heard that if you flush a trany that has never been flushed it may hurt it rather than help it...

I would change the fluid and filter then run it for about 500 miles then do it again...

The reason people say it may hurt rather than help is because alot of the time a sort of sludge can build up in the trans and literally act like glue and hold things together or prevent slipping. A proper tnanny flush can wash away this "sludge" and make things slip.

im so glad this topic popped up i have a ? about the e40...on the tranny itself was there any major differences throughout the years? im lookin to hook it up to a 460 i purchased and im gonna be buying a re-man unit and wanna know what would be the best year to get and was considering throwing in the "monster in a box" upgrade kit from factory tech trannies....but thats freakin 1100 bucks when i can buy a reman unit from autozone and i know that sounds kinda cheap but its 1400 for the whole thing...they even have a "performance" version but i dont think it will hold 600 plus which is what im getting according to coast high performance...any input will help :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

There is a difference between the 460 and 351 E4OD trannies. The 460 has a larger bolt pattern. As for getting the best one a I would say a 1997 Tans. It is the last year of the E4OD and 460 combo in a ford truck and would most likely have all of the updates installed. Or you could get one from a truck that had a Powerstroke diesel as these had better internals to cope with the diesels torque potential.

Sometimes if you drive through deep enough water you can actually have a fish swim up into you transmission and die, causing a horrible smell and all sorts of other problems. The best way to get rid of this problem is by introducing something that can take care of dead animal matter, a snail, or even a bottom feeder(like a catfish) should work. The problem you will run into next is: let's say you introduce a catfish to clean up your dead fish problem; well, now you've got a live catfish problem and the only solution is to introduce something that can hunt and **** a catfish, like a shark. Pretty soon you've got a deep sea octopus and a couple of killer whales infesting your transmission and you're spending so much money on harpoons as to make the car no longer worth owning. You might as well just give up now and buy a new Bronco.

so i understand 97 is the best year but i dont think the "upgrades" will hold up to 600 plus horsepower...what should be done?....as tfor the fish story....hilarious!!!! hahaha

Any tranny rebuilder can put in upgraded internals that are made of a stronger alloy(metal). If you get one from diesel though I think it will hold up just fine. Oh and Power Take Off is for when you are running some sort of hydralic tool like a winch or snow plow that would be permanently attached to the vehicle.
